What was the first book you recall reading that made a difference to you?

For me, as an urban NJ kid, it was Tolkien's works. They inspired my lifelong love of nature & wild places. I also loved the found family fellowship, a trope I tend to use a lot in my writing.

@crcollins Harriet the Spy was one of the first books I read by myself, voluntarily. It was the first book I remember trying to stay up late and read under the covers with. I don’t know what the impact was, but if nothing else, I tried my first tomato sandwich because of it.
