Because the mods at aus.social think adding barriers to opinion is good

(when sharing articles or discussing political issues that don’t impact you personally (ie outside of your lived experiences))

Means if you study something you need to protect others by CW?

This is insulting especially if you want to promote a discussion or highlight a problem, I have to set up a barrier to my content because I HAVE NOT LIVED THE EXPERIENCE!!!

The funny thing is I like the content warning option, but I find it overused as many items under the CW flag would fail the legal reasonable person test on offensiveness.

@Voradams Generally speaking any discussion from those without lived experience tends to fail to capture the sufficient nuance and understanding that would otherwise be conveyed by those with lived experience. It's also a safe assumption to assume that those with lived experience are already much further ahead than you in terms of having had that discussion.

Perhaps you may consider yourself an exception for whatever reason, but across a general/large population? Very unlikely.

In the end, the majority of people tend to want to talk more about day-to-day things and less contentious things, and these kinds of rules are there to set a standard for a minimum level of peace, especially when it comes to large online communities.

As much as I share the same frustrations, I'm already busy enough that this is not a battle that I'd want to pick. Most peoples' answers would be to find another server where you can have those discussions.

@matthras the problem is simple. The people who moved here with me from Twitter would have wide ranging discussions on a wide array of topics.

What you are saying if I want to continue having interactions like this is to do it on another server.

If that is the case, I will. Just disappointed that the welcoming experience I enjoyed here did not last long.

@Voradams If anything, I've enjoyed discussions here with fellow academics on non-contentious/political topics on this server, and there are discussions with people on other Mastodon instances that I enjoy similar discussions with (that, at least I've seen, doesn't leak out onto the aus.social local timeline). So if you have friends on other Mastodon instances, having discussions /should/ be fine, I think.

It's more that specifically on this instance and the people on this instance, that it's best to steer clear on discussions on certain political & contentious topics, because anything you toot (unless privacy settings are set) will appear on the local timeline as well.

In my opinion it's a small price to pay for maintaining peace on this server and being able to interact with fellow Aussies.
