Great work by @davidslifka!
He's written an exhaustive post on how to scale the Fediverse.
And he's using Friendica groups to help this along.
I'm going to talk more about this in a few hours because this is ambitious.

Thanks for taking up the charge. A couple of observations *as a private #mastodon Instance owner* to add.
Top: An automated instance software upgrade path. As an Ubuntu wannabe, I've been stuck somewhere in 3.x. An availability alert and a trigger in Sidekiq.
Next: Mature Free Support. Nondevelopers don't grok #github #techweenie lingo. Self support like #Wordpress comes to mind. Centralized.
Anyway, thanks!

Dashboard metrics
Mastodon publishes the number of servers, accounts, and MAUs (Monthly Active Users). However, this is far from enough to understand how the ecosystem is faring.
I just realized that regarding this, servers could lie. Any rogue server could claim it's hosting 200K users. So we would need a way to only count users on servers we trust, because there isn't a single source of truth.

Placing ads in a feed
Dear god, NO!
Offering algorithms
ughhhhhhh
@yuki2501 @davidslifka The approach that I prefer is crowdfunding.
There's a certain context ads can work, and that's if the server is specifically for commerce (e.g., a Craigslist or Etsy-style marketplace).
