Republicans tell you to go to school if you want a better job.

They turn around and tell you that you wouldn’t be in debt if you hadn’t gone to school.

I call bull.

Every job should pay a livable wage, and companies that don’t pay it should be responsible for the cost of public assistance.

@prodygy Republicans are idiots.
@prodygy i agree that jobs should pay a reasonable wage, but would you argue that newspaper delivery people (usually kids) should pay a living wage? Surely "real" jobs should. But an unflinching "all jobs should" seems overly simplistic, no?

@lythander paper delivery boys are a thing of the past.

Kids generally don’t work full time. Arguing for low wages helps corporations who have been shortchanging Americans for decades.

@prodygy That's fair. Given the cost of a physical paper no one would pay for them anyway.

Where do you draw the line then? Like the UK have 2 minimum wages, one for under, say, 23, and one for over? I agree that full time jobs should pay a reasonable, living wage. Presumably we can outlaw tipping at the same time? Because the inflation that a change like this would require the Fed to raise rates and put people out of work to address that. It's a big messy problem if you look closely.

@lythander @prodygy
There's a good case to be made that profits have been driving inflation, not wages growth. In Australia anyway.
@Helen_Noonan @lythander profits are driving inflation in the USA too. It’s price gouging, not wages.
@prodygy @lythander Won't get anything at all without fighting. Yesterday I found out you guys don't even have the right to sick leave! I still get shocked by things I learn about the USA.
Australia got its fair work rights because we had strong unions in the day. Not so much now since so many years of conservative governments have worked hard to neuter them. We've definitely been going backwards.

@Helen_Noonan @lythander oh, our labor laws and culture are insane.

My friends from New Zealand can’t believe how many Americans work 60 hours a week.

@prodygy @Helen_Noonan Well yes lots of us do, though 60 hrs a week as a white collar worker is vastly different to 60 hrs in blue collar or even worse, service sector jobs. We need unions back.

@prodygy There should be something like the Affordable Care Act for attending school, so people won't run into guaranteed debt traps placed by the private schools lobby in Congress.
