I have named one of the local hooded crows Frederick, after the Swedish king who chocked on a bun.

Frederick is a bit plump, and really likes his peanuts. He has also learned that when I throw something it doesn't mean "EVIL HUMAN, DODGE!" but rather "FOOD INCOMING!"

He often has a posse of a few more timid birds following him around, but I'm not sure if they're the same group or not.

I don't have any photos of Frederick, so please enjoy this AI assisted portrait of him.

#crows #crowtodon

I'm not yet 100% sure I'm identifying Frederick correctly, and gender is very much assumed, but his eating habits earn him his name, and his name earns him his gender. ๐Ÿ˜„

Also, internet tells me that male crows are bigger and typically bolder than females, so it might not even be wrong. Maybe I'll be able to catch his softer calls some day: internet again leads me to believe that they're different enough for males and females for even my wooden ears to tell the difference...

By the way: if you decide to feed local crows, PLEASE DON'T FEED THEM WHITE BREAD, especially during mating season.

Urban hatchlings are sometimes flightless and not long for this world due to bad nutrition.

Give them seeds, dog treats, nuts, fruit, and corpses of your enemies to feast upon.

Remember: crows are too metal for white bread.

@nikodemus also boiled hen's eggs, but these also will attract foxes.
@Linza If I can get a fox on my balcony that's worth it! ๐Ÿคฃ

@nikodemus @catnip I bin my old white bread. Nothing can eat it, which is why I buy it.

Hmmmโ€ฆ

@nikodemus and how better to get rid of the trail of the dead? It's so hard to dispose of one's vanquished foes in these days of bureaucracy and surveillance. Thank the gods for our covid friends.
@nikodemus @capnthommo I have pigs for that, 8 pigs.

@nikodemus But I was giving the corpses of my enemies to my local food bank.

I guess I can spare SOME for the crows.

@SteveClough @nikodemus do you remove the boots? That's really important. Leather chewed by birds can be weaponised.

@nikodemus

๐Ÿง™ ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ”ฎ Don't feed them white bread.

@kalizoid313 @nikodemus don't feed anything white bread. It's awful when thrown up.
@nikodemus How many corpses are too many? Asking for a friend.
@patricklee @nikodemus My freezerโ€™s not that big. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@MissPixiePancake @nikodemus itโ€™s not like weโ€™re asking you to fridge peopleโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s mean and something Gail Simone invented or at least codified.

@patricklee @nikodemus She sounds chill. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@MissPixiePancake @nikodemus oh manโ€ฆ if you donโ€™t know Gailbear, youโ€™re missing out.

Sheโ€™s still just tweeting but sheโ€™s an awesome comic writer who loves to troll and people still fall for it.

Iโ€™d hug her if I met her and she agreed.

Legolas pubes. That saga is epic for me and why I followed her initially.

@patricklee @MissPixiePancake @nikodemus Sounds like you need a log chipper. Donโ€™t forget to remove the teeth from the body and any papers to avoid detection. (Murderer detected in USA due to the teeth in the river and papers are chipping his frozen victim into the river from a road bridge).
@mycams @patricklee @MissPixiePancake @nikodemus Beginner mistake. Watch the movie Fargo for more instructions on how NOT to do this.
@mycams @patricklee @MissPixiePancake @nikodemus
In Australia murderers use the kangaroo slaughter industry to hide bodies. The cvnts.
@nikodemus saw this out of context, misread "crows" as "cows", and wondered what bizarre alien world I had stumbled into where there are cows you might describe as "urban hatchlings"

@nikodemus also. Please don't feed them mince.

Give them a few cat or dog food kibble pieces. Not a handful. Not cup. Half a dozen pieces. Maximum.

Don't feed them regularly please. Different times each time. Otherwise they get used to it and stop hunting/gathering

Some one morning, some the next afternoon, change the times.

Thank you for caring about our wildlife..

@JoanMastodon @nikodemus I'm fairly certain that's not a crow.
@mcpinson @nikodemus well WTF was all the noise she was making yesterday at 5.00am? Perhaps she was making a cock of herself?
@nikodemus I am amused by the thought that anyone can control what a crow eats.
@Virginicus @nikodemus We can't control what they eat, but we can control what we feed them.

@nikodemus Crows can be so polite... When I was fit enough to take daily walks, I would always pass the same group of three crows.

I'd always greet them, of course, like I do with all birds, but after a week or so, they came up to and started greeting me.

Nothing special, just walking up, telling me caw-caw while looking me up and down, and after I said "hi!" back, they'd go back to doing their job, which is being the cutest dinosaurs, of course.

@nikodemus ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
@nikodemus So, trail mix with dog treats, basically. That's doable!
@nikodemus We have two crows that just hang around and wait for the two feral/stray cats to abandon their meals and then they swoop in and finish it off. So I hope cat food and kibble are OK for them... #crows #birds
@canicallyouschmitty @nikodemus I had robins feeding their hatchlings cat food all last spring due to lack of bugs. So I think it's OK. But they prefer bugs.
@canicallyouschmitty Cat food should be fine, AFAIK. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

@nikodemus

I always save them the dregs from the whole grain crackers, cereals, and chips we keep around. They seem to enjoy that. (I have to eat a lot of hippie chow for medical reasons.)

@nikodemus they always get the innards from the chicken. ๐Ÿ˜ and sometimes egg.
@nikodemus They like unsalted peanuts
@nikodemus My store is out of dog treats, but the rest of this should be easy enough.

@nikodemus I approve of this message.

Especially that bit about corpses - recycling should be encouraged

@nikodemus

The crows are hungry and I am all out of white bread.

@nikodemus The also have a taste for suet, which they need in large quantities during breeding season.

@nikodemus But I love white bread! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Sorry, Iโ€™ll let myself out. ๐Ÿ˜
