Books time 2023! #MollysReads2023

I did this on the hellsite the last two years so have decided to migrate it over here.

Last year I read 89 books. My best year ever. I have set my goal to 80 for 2023 and would be delighted to get to 100 but mostly I just want to enjoy reading because it makes me happy.

This thread will detail everything I have read this year.

Book 1 #MollysReads2023

When I lived in Modern Time by Linda Grant

Read this as part of my challenge to read all the #WomensPrize for Fiction winners from the inaugral year to date.

This is the 5th book that won and I have absolutely no idea how or why it did as it mostly bored me. How did this win over White Teeth, Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya sisterhood? A total mystery to me

2.5 stars for this one. Things can only get better from here

Book 2. The Chasing of Eleanor Vane by Sierra Simone. It's a novella, so a quick read, but what a fabulous romp it is. It's got bodice ripper vibes with Dukes and Ladies and grand houses, but I loved how she wove consent into the sex and gave the female author real agency. Gotta love an older man dark brooding Duke!

Fabulous fun and sexy

Book 3.

A Man called Ove

Oh my heart. What a book. This one made me cry at multiple points throughout and I absolutely loved it.

Ove is a brilliant character. Despite being the way he is he is hugely likable, loveable even.

The end is both heartbreaking and somehow satisfying.

Amazing writing. 5 🌟

Book 4. How to Kill your Family. It's fun and a bit mad but I found the ending really disappointing. Basically she did all she did for absolutely nothing and we are left with a truly unsatisfying ending.

Book 5. Mrs England

Not much happens then it all happens fairly quickly and then there is a tiny twist at the end. The author is a good writer, atmosphere, setting, character description but it was overly long and slow and the twist wasn't really much of one

Book 6. Poison by Jade West

This is SO good. So often smut is lacking either in hot sex or in plot but not this gem. A good solid plot and I loved that some different kinks were explored, especially his love for dirty knickers. Also the female character has a chronic health condition. A storyline that is rarely seen in erotic fiction
4.5 stars for this fab book

Book 7

Lemon by Kwon Yeo-sun

Don't know if this is because it is translated but I found this confusing and hard to follow. I only finished it as it was super short and hoped the ending might be satisfying but it was not.

Book 8 Harry by Prince Harry

This book absolutely blew me away. I cried at the end twice. Despite being long it's so readable. Bravo to all who helped him with this. I found him believe, honest, self aware and determined. 5 star read and potential to be one of my top books of the year

Book 9 Just Got Real
Older women online dating catfishing story. Some really good bits and some so not. Did keep me hooked right to end. Really is about finding female friendships. 4 stars

Book 10. Maybe your should talk to someone

I really took my time with this memoir. I regularly had to set it aside and contemplate parts of it. I found it really interesting and also moving. It made me realise how good therapy can be so good and powerful.

If I had the budget I would totally try and find a good therapist. Sadly I just don't
