Masks work! Amazing study of 26 elementary schools that pulled wastewater samples every 15 minutes. Researchers observed the masked percentage in the school. “The odds of a positive wastewater signal in the 5 days after one of these observations decreased by 47% for each 10% increase in the proportion of people who were fully masked."

“It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Even a little nudge can keep kids safer at school.”

@augieray Could you post a link to the study please? I've been curious about how well masks work against the new variants of the virus.

@RandomCoolzip I'm so sorry, I thought I included the link to the article! Here it is, and I'll add it to the original post. Thanks!

@augieray @RandomCoolzip I think concern was the actual study isn't linked, I assume due to conference embargo. I really hope @rkfmiller can point us to where to find it once it's available online!

@RandomCoolzip @augieray Here’s a Twitter thread from the author (she does have a Mastodon account also, but it’s not posted there) https://twitter.com/rkfmiller/status/1628469526022213632?s=20

At the end of the thread she says a preprint isn’t complete yet, but they’re working on it.

“Just presented at #CROI2023: We counted the number of kids and adults fully masked at school and compared it to wastewater in covid. After correcting for background vaccination and case rates, masking was significantly associated with lower probability of covid+ 💩 (1/x)”

@augieray except 2 years ago that 47% was lied about and we were told it’s high 90%s…

@arnandegans @augieray I think you might want to read it again. The 47% is linked to every 10% more wearing masks.

If we had everyone (as close to 100%) wearing them correctly and properly sized, then maybe high 90s.

@augieray it's like people discovering germs and the benefits of washing their hands all over again
