Gary, Indiana: City of the Century | Abandoned America

Originally a thriving steel town and home to the Jackson Five, the city of Gary, Indiana now lies in ruins. | Abandoned America

It's striking how the fate of company towns share a similar narrative.

As money was being sucked out of the local economy by corporations, none of it was being used to modernize equipment or business processes for the long haul.

American corporations appear particularly bad at investing in themselves for long term success.

Too focused on draining company coffers to feed insatiable stockholder dividends, stock buybacks, & exorbitant management compensation plans.

America pays a high price to keep a social hierarchy based on corporate greed & bigotry

Racism, misogyny, and xenophobia are efforts at wage suppression

It's used to keep a privileged class enriched at the expense of others

Corporations are experts at using prejudice & bias to suppress wages.

Low wages prevent the diversification of local economies because it thwarts women, PoC & immigrants from starting businesses.

Gary, Indiana - another victim of bigotry & blinkered corporate vision.

I recommend watching "The King of Steel Town" by director Chris Sautter. I am familiar with the area and its politics. #Gary, #Hammond, #EastChicago...very particular.
