If you're using Mastodon on a computer, there's an optional "advanced" mode available on your server's website.

By default Mastodon uses a simple single column, but advanced mode is a Tweetdeck-style multicolumn interface that lets you add as many columns as you want. This includes special pinned hashtag feeds where you can combine, require or exclude particular tags within a single feed.

How to use Mastodon’s Tweetdeck-style Advanced Web Interface | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips I learned something new. Thanks!
@feditips on some instances it seems to be the default.
@feditips I remember when Mastodon actually looked like this by default a few years ago. Fortunately, it was changed to the default single column.
@feditips I discovered it within my first 10 minutes in mastodon and it made my day. I've been using tweetdeck for years and having the same UI format already built in definitely helped me keep using it
@feditips Love it, but really needs to have sound alerts turned off as a default.
@feditips ONLY on TABLET.TOUCH..NOTHING ELSE... NO SUCH ACTIONS
@feditips totally loving the multi-column look. May result in purchase of a wider #monitor Have a 24'" diag. Its not enough. Want more pixels!
@feditips it can look like that on an iPad too. It can be quite handy.
@feditips I use the multi column layout showing Home and Federated views plus 2 pinned hashtag columns. Far more efficient for me. To refresh any view I just tap on the column heading.
@feditips What I've noticed about the 4-panel advanced mode is, the rightmost (in my setup) panel where I #Explore Posts and News never updates its contents. The Home panel updates whenever I hit `Home`, but this does not happen in the `Explore` panel.
@feditips at least 7 fingerprints attempt to your site!
@feditips Wow, this is a gamechanger! Will give it a try
@feditips oopsies I have to go slightly correct a post to newbies
@feditips Is there a way to mute hashtags instead of following them? That would be very helpful but I can't seem to find a way to do it.

@feditips I must have been made with other material.😁
I used it from beginning, all stuff
visible at once, Tweetdeck kind.

Same as original would be nice it can handle more columns, customized searches, maybe multiple accounts..things to think in a long-time future.
Just couple ideas flipped on air...

@feditips also: there are multiple, custom columns on @megalodon for android! \o/
@feditips See, I like this in theory, but the columns are all super narrow like that. I don't need half a dozen narrow little columns. I need 2 or 3 wider ones, and that seems not to be an option. Frustrating.
@feditips its just wild to see myself in someone elses post...

@feditips

glad you posted this because I had the multi columns, then accidentally made it go away and was wondering how to get it back. thanks.

@feditips

Okay, I tried to reset it back to having multiple columns, but it didn't work for me. Help. tks.

@feditips

I've never used the pinned hashtags feed.

Sounds interesting. A timeline all by itself. 👍

I'll have a play.

@feditips I knew the advanced mode, but I havn't known the 5th column extension - now I got it, that's great 😃 👍
@feditips
..Also works in landscape mode on mobile phones. :)
@feditips I use this to create a column of posts from my list of close friends. That way, I don't miss their toots in amongst all the noise of my main newsfeed.
@feditips TIL Mastodon has a single column mode! I think I might have signed up back when it only had multicolumn, and my account defaulted to that as a result.
@feditips loving it! You can pin lists as well. I used to use tweetdeck in a former life, so this is like coming home!😍
@feditips looking at this gives me fucking anxiety.
@feditips It's great. it's like Tweetdeck, columns and multiple read and react choices. And set the SLOW mode for full control
@feditips Adding columns appears to require hashtags. I'd like to add a column of an instance, but haven't found a way to do that.
@dangillmor @feditips It doesn't require hashtags; you can, for instance, add a column for a list. But I don't know if you can do instances.
@feditips wish I could have one home column unfiltered and one with boosts removed but the filter seems to affect both together.
@feditips why I can't pin the 'lists' column on mastodon? I want to be able to switch between my lists easily. No way to do that?
@feditips Oh this is amazing! Thank you!
@feditips @tapbots @ivory 😅 will we have columns in the future? btw more ways to work with the hashtags would be nice!
@leibiel yes, columns are coming on Mac soon. And we still have a lot of work to do with hashtags. It will all come. 🙂
