STOP DOING THREADS

  • POSTS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SPLIT INTO 25 PARTS
  • YEARS of POSTING yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for a low character limit
  • Wanted a low character limit anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called “SMS”
  • “My post got so long that I had to split it into 10 parts. Stay tuned for the 20 part sequel” - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

LOOK at what Mastodon Users have been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the Fediverse and protocols WE built for them:
(This is REAL Posting, done by REAL Mastodon Users)

  • Why communism will win, a 🧵 (1/255)
  • Why I should be allowed to index all your posts for profit, a thread (1/X)
  • The rise and fall of Twitter (283/185,781)

“Hello, I would like a 500 character limit please”
They have played us for absolute fools

@starshine It’s better to write a blog post (I use Medium) and share the link wherever you like. It is far easier to read than a thread and will get indexed by search engines. Plus, you can easily make edits later to fix typos or add more context. Medium and other blog systems could add Fediverse support. Tumblr may have it already.

Agreed, I also prefer reading blogs instead of long threads (and I also use @medium). Mastodon does allow editing, though.

@funcrunch @starshine @medium It’s good that Mastodon allows editing for posts, but you cannot insert a post into a thread later like I could add a paragraph or inline quote on Medium. Depending on the content, I may want to go back and revise it and note that it has been updated at a certain point. If people are still arriving via search years later it is good to keep it useful.
@brennansv @starshine As we used to say in ye olden dayes, gyofb. I don't mean that in the sense of "you should leave this place," but in the sense that if you wish to post essays, post them on yofb.
@brennansv @starshine One thing I've encountered when seeing Medium posts is anxiety about whether reading it will use up one of my three monthly page views. #MeteredPaywall
