Happy Birthday Iain (M) Banks - one of the greatest authors, missed every day! Have a nice malt in his memory. #IainBanks #IainMBanks #books @bookstodon
@IainMac9 @bookstodon Iโ€™m having one now ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅƒ
@IainMac9 @bookstodon and the best opening line of all time: โ€œIt was the day my grandmother exploded.โ€ I remember reading that line and devouring The Crow Road. A great talent sorely missed

@IainMac9 @bookstodon
Fave Iain Banks: The Wasp Factory
Fave Iain M Banks: Against A Dark Background
Fave Culture: Use of Weapons

The Culture novels got me through lockdown. He was truly brilliant.

@IainMac9 @bookstodon One of the finest contemporary & sci-fi authors of our generation. I've read most but clearly not all. I once saw a small production of The Wasp Factory. A wee play beautifully done. When I we gonna see a movie of the Culture Universe? Though I am afraid they'll give it to Michael Bay I really would like to see it done justice. Anyone know the Wachowskis?
@sentient_water @IainMac9 @bookstodon Amazon has brought the rights to adapt to the books, no news yet on who could be in the running to write/direct or be show runner.
@musingoddity @sentient_water @bookstodon there was talk of a POG Amazon adaptation - not seen anything about it recently - just hope they donโ€™t bastardise it like they did with the Hitchhikers movie (the BBC tv version was ok)
@IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon I was a bit confused by POG. Player of Games! Still one of my favourites. I'm just excited to see the quirky AI & ships. Always enjoyed their being shown as full characters rather than just mechanical plot devices. Still I'm excited to hear it's a possibility.
@IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon *I was a bit confused by POG shortening not the book itself.
@IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon So excited ๐Ÿ˜€. It's about time this truly is the golden age of televisual entertainment. If they mess it up though. Heads will roll!!
@sentient_water @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon Noooooooo....

I suppose putting the Culture onscreen would be difficult for Bezos to stomach ideologically
Consider Phlebas - Wikipedia

@ihaywood @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon What a moneyless, stateless, free, utopia were everyone has everything they need. What I find amazing about The Culture is it is as truly utopic as it gets in any fiction but he finds the cracks. Bezos & buddies would not fit in.
@sentient_water @ihaywood @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon don't we all dream of joining the Contact Section? Or even (gasp!) Special Circumstances?
@Wyvernsridge
I think just to be a citizen of The Culture would be enough.
Though the books are clearly sci-fi, they also at times feel like fantasy. And by that, I'm referring to one of the aims of fantasy fiction is to create worlds readers wish to be in.
Many-a-time when reading Culture books I've let my imagination wander into this world. I deeply wish it really existed. I'd be there faster than a rat up a drainpipe.
Perhaps Banks was always a Contact agent, and has gone home.
@sentient_water @ihaywood @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon
Apparently Bezos (and Musk) are big fans of The Culture books. Though their taste is clearly acceptable, they also obviously have no sense of irony
@IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon I highly rate Transition. Which seemed to draw the best from both his contemporary & science fiction. There are so many to choose from.

Unless there have been more recent developments, it appears Amazon eventually dropped the project:
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/aug/26/amazon-tv-adaptation-of-iain-banks-culture-series-is-cancelled

This for me was a huge shame No doubt, it likely wouldn't have stood up to expectations - many such adaptations haven't.

Amazon TV adaptation of Iain Banks' Culture series is cancelled

Authorโ€™s estate says timing wasnโ€™t right, while scriptwriter says he is โ€˜mystifiedโ€™ by move

The Guardian
@calmconsidering @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon That is a shame. Still it'll give me time to reread all The Culture novels again before Amazon imposes its version of the universe on my brain.
@sentient_water @IainMac9 @musingoddity @bookstodon
I can only really see Phlebas being adaptable as it's the most "space opera" of his works, and perhaps PoG, due to it being quite a linear read, or Surface Detail. The rest though.....
Much as I'd love to see it, no way is Excession filmable
