Poughkeepsie's Abandoned Hudson River State Hospital: Glad to Be Free

As lovely as it is treacherous, Hudson River State Hospital is perhaps the most dangerous building I've ever photographed. Here's why. By Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America

@AbandonedAmerica daaaaamn. are you ever afraid the floor’s going to give out under you or the walls come falling down on you?
@tillybridges sure! This place was terrifying, but, you know, gotta get the photos
@AbandonedAmerica dedication!
@tillybridges some would say an almost unimaginable degree of foolishness, either way I guess it works 😉
@AbandonedAmerica take the compliment, take the compliment! 🤣
@tillybridges God that's tough when you have hardcore imposter syndrome but you are right. Thank you
@AbandonedAmerica @tillybridges Hi yes as a historian I am compelled to say this is dedication and courage thank you and good night. ❤️
@kittychandler thank you very much, I'm trying very hard not to offer some excuse why it's something else as per @tillybridges request 😬 it's really challenging
@AbandonedAmerica @tillybridges She’s right though, and it’s a good habit to get into. ;)
@AbandonedAmerica @tillybridges (Don’t worry, I have the same problem a lot.)
@kittychandler @tillybridges it is hard to break, it's so reflexive. But to the original point, this was a very scary place and I'm surprised nobody has died in it yet
@kittychandler @AbandonedAmerica if it helps, one thing that’s helped me accept compliments better is that to not, to brush them off, or deflect, kind of implies you don’t trust the person giving them. and they’re trying to tell you how much they appreciate you and your work. and the last thing I want to be is disrespectful to people who got something out of what I do. It works pretty good for me! 🙂
@AbandonedAmerica wow this is a spectacular perspective! Weren’t you a wee bit nervous getting this shot?
@AbandonedAmerica Wow. Stuff of nightmares. Maybe I will stay up a bit longer.
@AbandonedAmerica These are great, but what the heck is this? I did wonder if you’d walked into an old episode of Scooby Doo?! Quite creepy. 👻
@paulpap it's the guy I was with goofing off with a sheet he found. I keep it around because it's my only "ghost" photo
@AbandonedAmerica You sure that’s not a UK NHS hospital?
@AbandonedAmerica Wow! I did a volunteer gig there as a high school senior (it was really badly set up though -- we weren't really needed) and I remember this GIANT bustling campus.
@patriciajhawkins wow, that must have been a fascinating experience. I would love to have seen this place when it was open. The grounds were enormous
@AbandonedAmerica Reminds me of a scene in "Enemy At The Gates."

@AbandonedAmerica

That could drive people crazy. Insane!

@GoatRoper that's sort of why I like it, tbh 😊
