Ron DeSantis is requesting medical records of trans students

6 of 12 universities are confirmed to have complied with the request, regardless of HIPAA violations

If a liberal did anything similar, you’d head right wing media talking nonstop about their freedom being violated.

But for some reason, if you attack our at-risk communities or apply the word “woke” then fascism is a-ok.

#TransRightsAreHumanRights

University of Florida
Florida State University
University of Central Florida
Florida A&M University
Florida International University
University of North Florida

have already complied with DeSantis. More confirmations are imminent

@flexghost stop the Tallahassee Mussolini now!
@flexghost
I'm interested in how this will impact student applications and enrollment.
@flexghost DeSantis uses UF (the flagship) to whip the lower ranked universities into submission. All the leadership at UF sleep at the foot of his board of trustees.
@flexghost If one of these students were mine, I would be in lawyer’s office tonight. Tonight.
@flexghost because we all know that appeasing fascists works.

@flexghost These universities and any other institutions that violate HIPAA are risking very serious consequences: the loss of all federal funding for research. That is the penalty. Will it be imposed? I hope so because HIPAA is one of the few ways we have to protect our private information.

P.S. I’ve had more than one run in with University of Florida on their flagrant disregard of their obligations under HIPAA.

P.P.S. Follow the money

@meltedcheese @flexghost Not HIPAA violation, but FERPA violation. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects students’ school and medical records. The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education should be investigating DeSantis and any Florida school administrators and government officials involved in illegally accessing students’ records. Further, trans students should have 504 protections under IDEA.
@flexghost Federalism is really something, you can run a state like a duchy and not a modern Democracy.
@flexghost by “already complied” you mean transferred medical records in violation of HIPAA?
@flexghost …looks like the “request” is carefully dancing around hipaa - not names but counts of students receiving treatment, # of treatments provided, etc. No less fucked up and better get challenged. But expect them to argue that the state collects similar stats on other diagnoses - covid, flu, cancer and others get reported. They’ll say “what’s the difference? We already get counts of covid diagnoses, we just want the same information on number of gender dysphoria diagnoses.”
