The #a11y hashtag is harmful to the #accessibility cause. As we start afresh on Mastodon, it’s time to let it die

With so many of us with accessibility needs having made the move to mastodon recently, the divisive question of the #a11y hashtag has been raised once again. I’d like to offer an updated version of…

Mosen At Large
@MosenAtLarge I respect your opinion, Mr. Mosen, but I'd like to offer a different perspective. There are a lot of people who like to read/write on social media and go about their day. I've met some people who have attention spans so tiny that reading more than two sentences gets them to roll their virtual eyes and mock you for writing a novel. It's unfortunate, but it's the sad truth of today's internet culture. If we want people to look and spread our message, sadly, we have to conform.
@MosenAtLarge Yup, when I first joined Twitter and saw #a11y everywhere after losing my sight and needing to use a screen reader for the first time I was confused! Only worked it out from listening to a podcast about accessibility

@MosenAtLarge If I search on #a11y I get to content from digital accessibility and assistive technology experts (both disabled and non-disabled) whereas if I search on #accessibility I get content from a very broad range of people talking about many different topics many of which are entirely unrelated to digital accessibility.

This shows that #a11y serves a different purpose, and allows experts to converse with each other and further their field and expertise.

@MosenAtLarge Thank you for an article that knocks it out of the park. I don't use that here. If I am talking about accessibility, I will use #Accessibility not that alternative.

@MosenAtLarge Like you, I won't use that I will use the full word in the hashtag.
