Today, a group of concerned contributors to the New York Times and allies issued an open letter about that outlet's consistent, dangerous #transphobia. Both our Editor in Chief @gabrielarana and Digital Editor Kit @oconnell signed on: https://nytletter.com

Previously, Kit O'Connell wrote about the Times' dangerous attacks on #trans rights in this 2023 GLAAD Media Award nominated story: https://www.texasobserver.org/emily-bazelon-transgender-healthcare-debate-new-york-times/

NYT Contributors’ Letter

At TXO we firmly believe that the Times and many other mainstream media outlets must do a better job of representing trans voices, and actual medical experts on #trans rights, rather than bigoted punditry. #LGBTQIA #TransRightsAreHumanRights #journalism @gabrielarana @oconnell

A predictable but absolutely craven response from the #NYTimes. They dismiss anyone concerned about trans rights, even their own contributors, as "advocates" but somehow transphobic lobbyists get to be neutral. (they also published a defense of the Wizard Lady today. What a sad and dangerous platform they've become)

New York Times Dismisses Open Letter, Calls Own Contributors Advocates — Assigned

The response failed to engage with the substance of the criticism of reporting on trans issues at the Times.

@TexasObserver

I just cancelled my subscription. I will not support a transphobic company. No thanks, I have too many friends who are worth a great deal more to me.

@TexasObserver @[email protected] @gabrielarana @oconnell Trans people aren't just people. We're advocates, activists, or we are "political"... This is so sad.
@TexasObserver this is who they've always been

@TexasObserver @e_urq @gabrielarana @oconnell

The, "and we're proud of it" at the end really was the finishing touch, lest anyone have any lingering doubts about the NYT & trans equality.

@TexasObserver @gabrielarana @oconnell I just subscribed to the Texas Observer as a result of this post. Thank you.
@azzageddi @TexasObserver @oconnell oh wow thank you so much. Feel free to let me know your thoughts on anything. It may not include the issue that’s about to come out I can mail it to you if you email me your address: [email protected] 🙌

@TexasObserver @gabrielarana @oconnell They're just continuing the bigotry that the NYT has pushed for years. Even down to the "actually, we're the ones with the science and evidence" stance when claiming their bigotry.

They did the same BS with gay people in decades past. The NYT just consistently refuses to have good takes on any subject.

@sterlingericsson @gabrielarana @oconnell Of course they talk to everyone but the "homsexuals" same as it ever was. This is a great example (of a troubling problem)
