In Norfolk there was a tradition on Valentine’s Eve of gifts being exchanged between lovers and sweets/chocolate being left for children. The giver of the gifts to children was known as Jack Valentine or slightly more creepily Snatch Valentine. This second name meant the gift would have string attached which would be pulled every time the child tried to grab the present until the third time when they would be allowed to keep it.
