I love Mastodon, but I miss my POC activist, #Desi, and #AsianAmerican communities back on Instagram and Twitter.

Like back on IG and Twitter, folks I know are talking about #NoToSB147, opposing the proposed Texas law that would prohibit immigrants from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from owning property.

I’m just not seeing that on here, and it’s unfortunate.

In the meantime, here’s more:

This is literally in the text of the #Texas bill:

"the following may not purchase or otherwise acquire title to real property in this state:…an individual who is a citizen of China, Iran, North Korea, or Russia"

See it for yourself at https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB147/id/2612943 and https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=88R&Bill=SB147

I can't speak for the others, but there are *tons* of Chinese immigrants with green cards, H1B, H4, and student visas living in Texas.

Barring them from owning a home is sick

Dammit. Texas Gov. Abbot is now *also* on board with banning Chinese immigrants from buying homes:

“…eyes have turned to Texas Senate Bill 147, which would strip citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea of the right to buy land or property, including homes. Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has already said he will sign it if it passes.”

Thank you to everyone who beat back the Texas bill that would have banned Chinese immigrants from buying a home.

Texas bill will no longer aim to ban Chinese citizens from buying homes, state senator says

A controversial Texas Senate bill will change its proposed policy to remove a stipulation that would ban all Chinese citizens from buying homes in the state, its author said.

NBC News

Good news! The bill that would initially have banned Chinese immigrants from owning property in Texas is now officially 100% dead, and not moving ahead.

This might be the end of the Texas battle, but it needs to be beaten back in each of the states where such bills are under discussion.

Bill that set out to restrict Chinese property ownership dies in Texas House

A controversial bill that initially aimed to ban all property ownership by Chinese citizens in Texas won't be moving forward.

NBC News

We won in Texas, but there are bills in 12+ states.

Florida’s legislature and Gov Ron Desantis passed a bill banning most Chinese citizens—and most citizens of Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, Iran, Russia, and N Korea—from purchasing homes.

The law goes into effect on July 1.

AALDEF, the ACLU, and others are suing, on behalf of a group of Chinese citizens who live, work, study, and raise families in FL:

@anirvan

How did the very vocal Cuban community in Florida let this slip through?

@anirvan That legislative text is xenophobic. Full stop.

@anirvan

That's extremely fucked up.

@anirvan This is the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) all over again.
@anirvan Did they forget about dual-citizens?
@hazel @anirvan It's worth pointing out that China doesn't permit dual citizenship and revokes the citizenship of people who naturalize in the United States. However, depending how this law gets interpreted, it could put a burden on former Chinese citizens needing to prove they no longer are. And another question is what will happen with persons married to Chinese citizens and if they can no longer jointly own property in Texas.
@anirvan
"No State shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

@anirvan tried in Wyoming too. Failed 23-39. But here’s how it looked before failing.

@anirvan This is insane. How do the think this doesn't violate federal fair housing? Thanks for sharing this here.

@anirvan it's intentional and it's one of those arsenine things about the #USA:

Ain't #OFAC and #Sanctions the responsibility of #Federal institutions like #StateDept & #TreasuryDept?

Cuz that's just pushing inherent #racism and it's also ignoring the fact that some people may be #refugees or otherwise law-abiding citizens but since they can't renouce their citizenship [i.e. #Iran doesn't allow that - period!] they'll face that issue.

@anirvan as a matter of fact, as per Iran's nationality law, every child with an Iranian father [regardless if legal custodian or biological parent] is also automatically an Iranian Citizen - even against their explicit consent.

That's why #nationality-based regulations are just bs unless people across the globe could switch their nationality and passports like a legal adress or prepaid phone provider.

Yet even the #USA is basically #paywalling #renounciation|s!

@anirvan the law should be amended for reciprocity. China places significant restrictions on foreign property ownership. You have to live in China for at least a year and can never rent out your house or sublet. India fully blocks any foreign property ownership unless you are a resident and even it places extra controls on Chinese Nationals. Anybody who is not a citizen or permanent resident should face the same restrictions that Americans face in their country of origin.
@lombaedi *or* we could treat people who live here with respect, regardless of the country they were born in. @anirvan
@anirvan I’ve seen a lot of this from the agriculture community about Chinese companies and/or government buying up farmland. I had no idea they are now extending that to actual immigrants. Good lord.
@anirvan TX is so stupid (a best word I can come up with atm). It’s par for the course that they aim for xenophobia instead of something sensible, like barring ownership by non-resident foreign nationals or firms/orgs/structures representing them. The conservative credo seems to be ‘hurt anyone who’s not white & rich whenever possible.’
@anirvan how about a compromise? Let start with you include businesses from owning housing properties like these for profit companies that are buying up all the houses to Jack up the rent. Include them in the bill and then we can talk about anyone you might want to include.
@anirvan This bill is blatantly unconstitutional.

@anirvan Wait, is this a thing *now*?!

Like, the the year of the lord 2023!?

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

@anirvan Does this idiot not realize how much Chinese (and probably Russian) capital is parked in US real estate?
@anirvan Holy crap. That's terrifying.
@estheria They're trying to bring the alien land laws back. They're not even pretending.
@anirvan would love to team up with you on outreach to bring our communities over, in addition to amplifying messages on all these platforms.
@anildash Have you come across good examples/models of how to help move communities over? Totally up for a call sometime
@anirvan @anildash Part of the problem is UX and part of the problem is virality. Much of online activism surfs recommendation engines to get information and CTAs in front of "undecided voters"/unactivated potential organizers/etc. There is no recommendation engine to surf in today's fediverse so an apples-to-apples activism might not be possible for some time. Some of the orangey features are great, tho! This was a major topic of discussion at decentsocial.net this weekend, notes forthcoming

@by_caballero @anirvan @anildash

Yes, masto needs an "algorithm" (or really, algorithms) that are designed to serve people rather than serve advertisers.

Coming from a family of librarians, its been obvious to me for decades that effective curation is power and that the power needs to be in the hands of the people.

@anildash @anirvan I miss the activist communities and individual folks too. It's the best way for me to be aware of stuff I want to know in our communities. (and hate crimes 🙁 ).

@anirvan Thanks for letting me know, this bill is terrible and more people need to know about it.

@TexasObserver

@samhainnight @anirvan we have been following this and will work on getting something written. Thank you for tagging us, it's valuable feedback
@TexasObserver Thank you! It's a national story, and I'm hearing grassroots buzz and fear about it from all over. If you're looking to talk to people, https://caasf.org/ are smart and can give good quote.

@TexasObserver @anirvan Thank you for getting the word out
@anirvan
for me and my actual political activist persona (there is one: @sotomayor2020 ), the #tweetstrike continues —‌ until @ElonMusk follows up on his vow to depart.
@anirvan Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

@anirvan 100%. There are some communities that just haven't moved over. For me, it's Asian community as well as fandom/pop culture.

And totally understandable bc moving to mastodon has a large learning curve and is definitely a commitment. It also requires quite a high level of tech savvy.

I don't see Mastodon being the new home for many communities with that kind of barrier in place. I think more likely a twitter clone will pop up

@kylahsia @anirvan Totally agreed on the challenges of Mastodon, but I doubt a Twitter clone will pop up that isn’t part of the fediverse. There are so many wannabe social networks that tried & failed to be next and I believe the intention of desiring growth & profit work against them. imo, it’ll be Mastodon with a more user-friendly front end. The idea that we can follow people on different platforms is going to be compelling - once people understand that.
@anirvan there’s so much negative news to keep up with. it’s difficult these days

@anirvan I barely see #NonBlackPeopleOfColor talking to each other about oppression. It seems like a lot of folks are fine watching Black people get abused by Nazis and trolls. I’ve only see Asian people post about racism when it’s directed towards Asians*. I don’t know if NBPOC have even learned how to talk about racism on here.

*I’m still building my follow list so this is based on a small sample.

@anirvan Again, folks, this is why I have no patience for the stupid entitled-ass "wHy ArE YOu sTILL uSINg twiTTER" takes I keep seeing here.

Because people we care about are STILL THERE. We need to figure out how to help out, perhaps get them moved over, but not abandon them.

#mastodon #blackmastodon

@anirvan I have seen it discussed here, but you’re right. It’s harder to connect up. And there are just fewer people here, and definitely fewer US-ians.
@anirvan Wait, that's illegal under the Fair Housing Act.
@anirvan Now that I think about it, that's the point isn't it. Take it up to the SC to try to get that overruled as well along with all the other progressive acts and decisions from the late 60s/early 70s.
@anirvan
I am Black with Desi ancestry (Dougla). I don't have a connection to my SA ancestry but nonetheless I am angered and disgusted by the proposed action. They want to roll immigration back to pre-1965 when very few POC were allowed into the country. They will not stop at Asians and MENA folks they want to ban anyone who isn't white.
@anirvan It's like the alien land laws of the late 19th--early 20th centuries, returning. 😠
@anirvan I also find Mastodon a bit too academic and miss non-academic people and causes that inspire me on Twitter. E.g. a lot of environmentalist and green business accounts. Here I am mainly seeing research. Feels a bit like a university newsletter. ;-) Nothing wrong with that... but it's only one fraction of reality.
