I love Mastodon, but I miss my POC activist, #Desi, and #AsianAmerican communities back on Instagram and Twitter.
Like back on IG and Twitter, folks I know are talking about #NoToSB147, opposing the proposed Texas law that would prohibit immigrants from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from owning property.
I’m just not seeing that on here, and it’s unfortunate.

I can't speak for the others, but there are *tons* of Chinese immigrants with green cards, H1B, H4, and student visas living in Texas.

Dammit. Texas Gov. Abbot is now *also* on board with banning Chinese immigrants from buying homes:
“…eyes have turned to Texas Senate Bill 147, which would strip citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea of the right to buy land or property, including homes. Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has already said he will sign it if it passes.”

Good news! The bill that would initially have banned Chinese immigrants from owning property in Texas is now officially 100% dead, and not moving ahead.
This might be the end of the Texas battle, but it needs to be beaten back in each of the states where such bills are under discussion.
We won in Texas, but there are bills in 12+ states.
Florida’s legislature and Gov Ron Desantis passed a bill banning most Chinese citizens—and most citizens of Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, Iran, Russia, and N Korea—from purchasing homes.
The law goes into effect on July 1.
AALDEF, the ACLU, and others are suing, on behalf of a group of Chinese citizens who live, work, study, and raise families in FL:

Cuz that's just pushing inherent #racism and it's also ignoring the fact that some people may be #refugees or otherwise law-abiding citizens but since they can't renouce their citizenship [i.e. #Iran doesn't allow that - period!] they'll face that issue.
@anirvan as a matter of fact, as per Iran's nationality law, every child with an Iranian father [regardless if legal custodian or biological parent] is also automatically an Iranian Citizen - even against their explicit consent.
That's why #nationality-based regulations are just bs unless people across the globe could switch their nationality and passports like a legal adress or prepaid phone provider.
Yet even the #USA is basically #paywalling #renounciation|s!

Yes, masto needs an "algorithm" (or really, algorithms) that are designed to serve people rather than serve advertisers.
Coming from a family of librarians, its been obvious to me for decades that effective curation is power and that the power needs to be in the hands of the people.

@anirvan 100%. There are some communities that just haven't moved over. For me, it's Asian community as well as fandom/pop culture.
And totally understandable bc moving to mastodon has a large learning curve and is definitely a commitment. It also requires quite a high level of tech savvy.
I don't see Mastodon being the new home for many communities with that kind of barrier in place. I think more likely a twitter clone will pop up
@anirvan I barely see #NonBlackPeopleOfColor talking to each other about oppression. It seems like a lot of folks are fine watching Black people get abused by Nazis and trolls. I’ve only see Asian people post about racism when it’s directed towards Asians*. I don’t know if NBPOC have even learned how to talk about racism on here.
*I’m still building my follow list so this is based on a small sample.
