So the Dell laptop tossed out a final BSOD and went belly up. So far it's shrugged off all efforts to resurrect it.

So I blew the dust off a couple of Windows 7 machines -- my mom's desktop, which I inherited (literal dust), and my original Lenovo laptop (ca. 2011) -- spent the weekend installing Win7 updates and poking at various other things.

They both have individual issues that make using them a bit challenging. So I'm hopping back and forth between them for now. Sigh.
#computers

The Lenovo is a 64-bit Win7 Home Premium machine with 650GB storage -- and only 4GB RAM.

It was fine back in the day, but it has issues running more than 3 modern programs at once. When stuff in the background kicks in (antivirus, Win update, ...), everything craaawls. And it hates Waterfox and Thunderbird.

Meanwhile ....
Me: So how about Win10?
Win10 installer: No.
Me: Oh.

Guess the Lenovo is too old.

I do like this workhorse machine, just in general, though it's pokey.

It's also not in great physical shape now. I carted this one across the US by car, plane, and train plus camping; I've deployed strategic black duct tape in places, and I also replaced both its screen and keyboard at various points.

I honestly have no clue why I never did anything but whine about its RAM. So I hit eBay for some cheap used sticks; we'll see how it likes a senior citizen upgrade. :D

@anotherwest Ubuntu! Eg Linux Lite. Works like a dream on my HP Compaq 6320 (4GB of RAM); stable, fast, fully-fledged, configurable.

@ralphderijke The main program where I spend my time is Word for Windows. But once I have a stable Win10 machine again ... maybe?

(I did load Red Hat Linux on my 486 after I'd migrated to a 586, but I couldn't figure out x-windows and gave up on it.)

@anotherwest Try Linux Lite - installing it is a breeze. And it comes with LibreOffice which can open, edit and save Word files. :-)
