Most plastics cannot be recycled.

Most plastics that *can* be recycled are *not* recycled.

Most plastic garbage ends up in landfills, is dumped into the ocean, or is incinerated, which poisons the atmosphere.

Microplastics are in your bloodstream right now, and are probably also in the food you eat.

BUT THAT'S OKAY!! 😃 Because producing and selling plastics is *very* profitable for the oil industry. Capitalists ❤️ plastic and we should too!!

@breadandcircuses Yup. The big oil companies are ramping up plastic production & promotion to counter declining fuel sales & profits. #keepitintheground

Recycling in America is truly a joke. I do it but not with all plastics since I already know that some will simple end up in the trash anyway. We need to do better.
@breadandcircuses Macro plastic garbage can be found everywhere because some people are just nasty and it never goes away. I've found it all over the place from oceans to bird nests.
@breadandcircuses I'm actually working on at least recycling stuff. Americans need to think that it's "cool" and "patriotic" to use reusable containers for us to actually get on board at the scale that will make a difference

@breadandcircuses Whatever evolves to eat plastic is going to do so well on the earth.

Not so much us.

But this is going to be the greatest time in existence to a group of microorganisms.

@breadandcircuses

"better living thru plastics!" 💩

strangely, even in the 60s, environmentalist were trying call attention to garbage as a hazard, but no.... US: "we have plenty of land, and after that, the oceans are huge!"

@breadandcircuses just look at the Shbell plant in Monaca, Pa.. it’s a $3,000,000,000, yes that’s billion dollars, plant just constructed to produce plastic. I will bet that those 5 toxic rail cars that exploded/had to be exploded, we’re headed to that plant!

@breadandcircuses Most plastics (pretty much any thermoplastics) can be recycled, but few really are because of capitalism and the profitability of externalized costs.

Different plastics have different relationships to oil industry - some of them, basically none except via energy sources.

Understanding these things is a lot more beneficial than "plastics = bad".

@breadandcircuses

@notwhatwethink

Many plastics that can be recycled can't be recycled here because our local council doesn't consider it 'economically viable to recycle them.' (I asked & that's what they said).
