This will be my master thread for #CycloneGabrielle information for Aotearoa.
This thread will be kinda Auckland focussed, but I'll include any and all information for other areas as I find it - it's just because Tāmaki Makaurau is home (despite me being in BOP currently)

I'll try summarise the #AEM Standups, including the Q&As, although it won't always be at 1pm sharp because work.

I'm not an official channel, so please do check the official websites if you're concerned.

MetService - Te Ratonga Tirorangi

Please take the time to check in with your friends and whānau, see if folks need a hand preparing for this huge weather event.

This includes:
Securing or dismantling things that could go flying
Emergency supplies - pooling resources is good
Bug out bag prep
Knowing where the CDC shelters are
Having a contact plan if you have to evacuate

But also just touching base.
Some folks thrive in emergencies, a lot of folks don't. They'll need pals.

To be fair, I think we all need pals rn

I've got a thread with a list of things for emergency supplies, and also good things to make sure are in your Go Bag.

You can find it here:
https://mastodon.nz/@FallenRedNinja/109834178127592999

If you have medical equipment that runs on electricity, it's worth adding a generator to that list if you can. Especially if you're in an area that could get cut off.

Also add
- A notebook in a plastic bag in the letterbox for notes to & from people that come to visit.
- 2x 10L sealed buckets of water for washing up

For those who maybe aren’t as terminally online in Aotearoa, Cyclone Gabrielle looks like it’s heading our way at the top of next week. Current predictions are that it’s going to be a Category 3 when it makes landfall here. Which means it’s a fucking doozey. If you’re in the top half of the North Island, you should check your emergency supplies and make sure you have a grab bag ready to go. I’ll be pulling updates from Weather Watch, with a side of Metservice #CycloneGabrielle

Mastodon NZ

#Auckland #CDEM alert has gone out to everyone within the towers.

For those travelling, or just outside the areas, the summary is:

Aucklanders are asked to self-evacuate to high ground if they see rising flood water or if they feel unsafe.
If you can see rising waters, get up and go to high ground.
Do not wait for an official notification, flash floods can happen hella fast.

And stay out of flood waters.

Do not travel unless absolutely necessary.

If you have to travel, check road conditions.

AT does a solid job at updating road closures, and Waka Kotahi will have all the SH closures and affected areas.

If you don’t already have one in place, made an emergency plan for yourselves and your homes.

This includes your shelter in place plans, supplies, and communications.

But also figuring out how to evacuate, what you’re taking with you, and how to communicate that with folks that might come to find you if phones go down.

The complete list of #Auckland evacuation Shelters and CDC sites is here - https://www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz/flood-event-2023/civil-defence-centres-community-hubs-and-shelter-sites

Shelters are temporary places for blankets, tea, and have council staff to help.

CDC have stretcher beds, food, and wrap around staff to help.

There may not be a CDC in your area, but there will be at least one designated shelter or CDC, with additional being brought online as needed.

Civil Defence Centres, Community Hubs and Shelter Sites

The Auckland region has experienced widespread damage from flooding and torrential rain, with reports of slips and inundation. Infrastructure and emergency services alike have been overwhelmed by the impacts of the storm.

You can find #Northland Civil Defence here - https://www.nrc.govt.nz/civildefence

Their Facebook page looks pretty active for up to the hour info.

Civil Defence - Northland Regional Council

Find links and information of use in the event of an emergency in Northland.

Western Bay of Plenty has a comms page here - https://www.westernbay.govt.nz/council/news-and-updates/public-notices-and-alerts?item=id%3A2l2eg7bkj17q9s5owpq6

Their socials aren’t super active, so I’d listen for radio if you’re there

Cyclone Gabrielle - Western Bay of Plenty District Council

The #BayOfPlenty Civil Defence page can be found here - https://www.bopcivildefence.govt.nz/

But their last update was on the 10th, so I’d not rely on them overly much

#CycloneGabrielle update for #Auckland - #Trains are going to stop around 9pm for trains heading out of the city, depending on the track.
Trains into town stopped at 8

They’re currently running to support getting everyone home from the Breakers game then that’s it.

Once the trains stop, that is all #PublicTransport in #TāmakiMakaurau brought to a halt for the cyclone

Edited to say AT has said there are some busses still running, so if your train is gone you may be able to bus.

Here’s a screen cap of the anticipated wind and rain action for #CycloneGabrielle between 10pm tonight and 5pm tomorrow.

As you can see, we’re looking at A Metric Fucktonne of water and some pretty intense winds swirling around over this next chunk of time.

The cyclone begins its hook around through eastern and back towards the central north island, and continues to rain intensely over Auckland and Northland.

Here’s a list of almost, if not every, electricity lines company for the different regions in the areas expected to be impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. These are northern through central north island, pushing right out to the east coast.

These are your best bets for outage maps, and for non-critical outage responses.

I’ve gotta have a shower and go to sleep, we’re in the theatre mines tomorrow morning.

Stay safe out there aotearoa.

If you’re in danger, call 111
If you need urgent support but it’s not life threatening, call 0800 22 22 10

Call or text 1737 if you need emotional or well-being support.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to be like ā€œwhy the fuck is all of this happening all at once?ā€

It’s okay to not know what to do next.

It’s okay to ask for help

Have your go-bags ready to go, and a clear plan on how to pack any last minute items such as toothbrushes or your pets.

Know where your snacks and water are.
Know where your candles and lighters or matches are.

Have a torch by your bed in case the power goes off overnight.

Charge your battery banks
Charge your phone

Definitely wear PJs tonight, just in case.

Stay away from rivers, lakes, waterfalls, coastlines - there’s a lot of water coming in & it’s hard to predict exactly what will happen to bodies of water.

Stay out of flood water.
Don’t swim or play in it.
Don’t drive in it.
Definitely don’t wash with it or water your garden with it.

Keep an eye or ear on official channels for up to date information.

Stay safe
Don’t do anything stupid
And don’t be dicks x

@FallenRedNinja your info must be invaluable for those in NZ, but the first line of this one had me immediately…

@FrancescaJ I’m not going to lie, originally it was going to just be rivers, lakes, and coastlines as per the official advice - but my brain is so used to the third word being waterfalls that I had to share that particular earworm with everybody! šŸ˜‚

So thank you for picking it up

@FallenRedNinja going with it was a good call!
@FrancescaJ sometimes we just need a bit of levity, even in the most serious of comms
