@feditips It would be useful if it mentioned that you can not reuse your email address on the new server. You need to specify another email address.

You only need a different email address if you're setting up a second account on the same server.

@feditips Then I must have created another account with this address, in the distant past. Can't explain it otherwise. Anyway, my account is properly migrated now, thanks.

I was able to use the same email account for both Mastodon accounts. I had to use a diff password for each, during the transition, but it worked out just fine.

I was moving to a new instance. Idk if that affected anything that way.

@feditips it's probably worth mentioning on that page that while the archive request function does not affect the server migration process, it does contain all the posts made to that server which people might want to keep for themselves.

This is particularly relevant in cases where the entire instance is being shutdown, as is currently the case with #MastodonLoL.

@feditips I really regretted changing servers. It's always shown as "hey wow, you can change servers on Mastodon! 😍"
But in reality, it's not an easy process, many of my posts are no longer available, and my profile now reads "joined in December 2022" when I really joined Mastodon in 2019.

I do not recommend changing servers unless you really have to.

@feditips It would seem a bit problematic transferring your Followers since they would not be on the same server as the one you move to.

One thing I found to be a pleasant surprise, was that I didn't need to use another email account for my new Mastodon profile. I only had to use a different password off of the same email account.

@feditips I can see this account on my PC, but I can only see my [email protected] on my phone. I have tried migrating it but it appeared to just disable both for about a week so I'm really not sure what the point is. Ideally I'd like one, probably just here, but it looks like I might have to have one on the main server as well. I have the same problem there too, as I created two accounts by accident when I was kicked out of one by some glitch for no reason.

@feditips one thing I thought was a pain was when I tried to move servers it worked ok and transferred my followers (which were very few) but it didn’t transfer any of the people that I was following. I would have to fine each person and follow them all over again. It was a real pain! I don’t know if I did something wrong or if that’s the way it is for everybody but I found it a hassle.

@feditips Hey, generally really appreciate what this account does.

I'm wondering if we could move away from the term "account migration" or "transferring your account." I feel like, since we can't move any of our content to a new server, it can be really frustrating for new folks to find that out after being told "everything is awesome! You can totally move your account to a new server!" Because when the average not-in-the-loop person hears "transfer your account" that sounds to them like transferring everything. And that is not the case.

@feditips I'm pretty sure that when moving to a new account these things are lost:

- filters you've set up
- hashtags you follow
- lists you've set up

I don't know of a way to transfer these - maybe others do?

Anyway, if you know about it in advance then you can gather that info from the old account and then manually set them up on your new account.

@henriavo There is also a community-based reason. Some servers specialize in certain topics, so if you are most interested in those topics, having an account on such a server might be beneficial (e.g. discoverability of your posts, meeting like-minded people, etc.). You can also have multiple accounts, but it's not always convenient.

@henriavo @feditips another reason to move would be if your instance becomes unusable because of federation wars, or if you're uncomfortable with its moderation policies.

I don't understand the guide? I read it several times. I'm fucked? First I got thrown off of Twitter an endless amount of times and now I happened by chance to sign onto the .lol when I joined Masterdon and it's being removed. It's an omen. Social media is bad for me.

@Svetlana56 @feditips I really struggled to get it done but I managed to figure it out in steps. The directions fedi tips posted work, but you have to go easy on yourself. I did it one bit at a time and only found the import/export by clicking on a lot of things.

The first maxim of an instance in Fediverse is "If you love somebody set them free". Many of them are not fully there yet - content is not yet portable ( export doesn't cut it).
