Brookings Institution study:

"Conservative podcasters were 11 times as likely as liberal podcasters to share a claim that fact checkers could refute."

To erase this kind of finding, you have to declare "there are no facts, really, just politics." But then there is no journalism, either. Which is exactly where the right wing has gone: disinformation is a myth.

"Mr. Bannon said in an interview that the Brookings report was a 'badge of honor'..."

Steve Bannon’s Podcast Is Top Misinformation Spreader, Study Says

A large podcast study found that Mr. Bannon’s “War Room” had more falsehoods and unsubstantiated claims than other political talk shows.

The New York Times

@jayrosen_nyu Also, "politics as religion".

What I mean is, the model where facts are simply "differences of opinion" is the domain of Religion. Challenging someone's "beliefs" is even considered out-of-the-norm. That model cannot be transferred to politics, or science, because they are incompatible ways of coming to consensus.

@jab01701mid

It's a good point. You have your religion, I have mine. We believe different things.

@jab01701mid @jayrosen_nyu What then is the functional role of political conservatism? Is it "Hold on; let's think about this new thing before we do it. Is it a good change?" I remember playing that role on a student council. Everyone got very excited by flat management structure, no executive steering policy, without thinking about implications. It seems like now a lot of conservatism is just "no" to any new idea without the allowance of thinking about it or considering data or studies.
@jayrosen_nyu I keep seeing things like this over the last 6 years, the thing is it doesn’t matter.
Mass marketing & propaganda are effective because of:
1) repetition
2) easy to remember messaging
3) repetition
4) emotional messaging
5) repetition

Facts don’t enter into it for effectiveness 🤷‍♂️
@jayrosen_nyu @johnlogic it’s 80’s and 90 AM talk radio all over again

@jayrosen_nyu

Remember when it sounded extreme of Romney to denounce fact checkers? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

@jayrosen_nyu Shocked. I'm shocked I tell you!

@jayrosen_nyu @panamared27401 Last I checked, ”Politics” translated as ”managing the common issues shared by all”.

Apparently that translation also no longer holds. 🤔

@jayrosen_nyu republicans all lie about everything

@jayrosen_nyu

Wait a minute ... isn't this SOB supposed to be in JAIL!

Indicted, stood trial, convicted, sentenced, appealed WTF!

Walter Lippmann on the Basic Problem of Democracy

“No man has ever thought out an absolute or a universal ideal in politics, for the simple reason that nobody knows enough, or can know enough, to do it.”

The Atlantic
@TryshHQ Thanks. I have a chapter about Lippmann and his views on this in my dissertation.
@jayrosen_nyu because, like Bannon said, his goal is to “flood the zone with shit,” to push back against the power of the free press.
@jayrosen_nyu Every fact is an “opinion” nowadays.
@jayrosen_nyu It’s pretty chilling how much Bannon seems to enjoy the cruelty of what he does. His militant low/no empathy behavior gives me the actual creeps.
@jayrosen_nyu I’ll put on my surprised face.
@jayrosen_nyu How the fuck is Bannon still podcasting and not in jail??
@jayrosen_nyu The obvious conclusion from this report is that liberals are more truthful than conservatives. While this is true, I believe a big portion of this 11:1 figure is accounted for by the tendency I've observed of liberals: when they do tell a lie they try hard to make their story fit the verifiable facts. By contrast, when conservatives tell a lie they tend to tell a low-effort story that's blatantly contradictory to the verifiable facts.
