One challenge I face as a gardener who easily forgets what she planted where is how to make plant plant labels that last. Without stakes and labels that are readable and easy to find, I have no idea where i should expect annuals and returning perennials to be showing up in the spring.

The problem is two-fold: 1) Finding plastic stakes that can withstand summer heat/winter cold and 2) Finding markers with ink that doesn't fade quickly.

@sarahc I eventually settled on vinyl type plastic with pencil for cheaper or temporary labels and aluminum plant tags for more permanent ones, and have been pretty happy with those overall.
@sarahc I do a rough sketch of my garden with notes of where things are. My cats have a tendency to dig up labels because they’re garden saboteurs
@sarahc I've used pop cans that I've cut into strips and then embossed using a stylus and fill them with wax crayon. They're not quite as readable as paint or ink, but they do last and if they crayon fades you can fill it in again.
@sarahc same problem i use sticks with string tied round them but coded. Two pieces of string means milkweed and so on. Cut notches in labels too. Point is i dont grow endless varieties every year and established plants take care if themselves
