Thinking of moving servers to #Hachyderm but hesitating because my posts wouldn’t move over 🥲

Although the longer I hesitate, the more posts I would have to lose

@mariyadelano what made you want to move over ?
@olk my current server (mastodon.social) is often freezing and unusable, to the point of seriously disrupting my work & social media presence. That’s most of it
@mariyadelano oh yeah that can totally ruin one's experience.
Probably because of the high number of users. hachyderm.io is pretty great though, @nova does pretty good job on maintaining it.
@olk yes I am not really considering moving anywhere but Hachyderm because @nova does such a great job. I also adored her book so I’m partial to that server because of that :) and many of the people I like and interact with on Mastodon are on there!
@mariyadelano @nova looks like it's the perfect time as well.
Hopefully someday instance migration will be seamless including moving over with your Toots
@olk @nova yeah I think I’ll be working on migrating accounts later tonight when I have the time to properly export data and follow all the steps
@mariyadelano If you want to bring with you some relevant posts, once you create your account on Hachyderm but before you do all the migration steps, you can boost whatever posts you like from your mastodon.social account on your new hachyderm account. That way at least they'll be part of your profile and since this is before migrating your followers, nobody would be annoyed by getting old repeated content on their feed.
@j3j5 @mariyadelano I just moved to Hachyderm last week (it was virtually painless), but this is a great suggestion! I hadn’t even thought about doing that. (Now I need to go back through my old toots, and see if I *need* to bring any of them with me.)
@joeygibson I mean, you can do it afterwards as well, the only thing is your followers will see your old posts again. It's not *that* bad but something to take into account (maybe warn your followers?) @mariyadelano
@j3j5 That is so clever!
@mariyadelano Hahaha, thanks but I didn't come up with it, I read it a few months ago and I'm just sharing the knowledge 😊
@mariyadelano You can create an account there, go through your history from there, and boost your best posts, then they'll at least show up on your profile!
@mendel yes someone else made that suggestion too! Super clever and none of the migration guides I looked at mentioned this.

@mariyadelano I was concerned about that too. But I took some comfort from realizing the old account and old posts are preserved. I just linked to my old account from the bio of my new account. So I know I can find my (very few) old posts and so could others if they were inclined.

I was more concerned about losing my “joined date”. I didn’t want to look like I was brand new to mastodon. So I put my original joined date in bio as well. 😀

@mariyadelano that along with the fact that my site is verified in both bios means people can be reasonably sure the old account was me. (That plus the fact that the old account says I moved to new account)
@michael yeah these are all good points! I'm doing it.
