I'm told I can add columns in the "advanced view" here, but can't figure out how to do it. Anyone point me to explainer with screenshots? Example: I want to add columns for journa.host and newsie.social --
@dangillmor Step one ?
@jab01701mid Yes, as noted, I'm in advanced view.
@dangillmor @jab01701mid are you looking to follow the Local Feed from other servers? I was looking for that also and I think that’s only possible in some clients, not the “advanced” view.

@dangillmor https://mastodeck.com/ does a great job of looking like TweetDeck columned layout.

https://elk.zone/ does a great job of looking like the native Twitter web interface.

Here's the native setting from the social instance:
https://mastodon.social/settings/preferences/appearance

MastoDeck - advanced Mastodon client

The ultimate Mastodon client for power users. Real-time, fully customizable, built to match how you use Mastodon.

mastodeck.com
@danstark mastdeck is fine for that but has other issues for me. wish i could combine best features of both.
@dangillmor After some basic tests, it seems you can pin lists as a column in the advanced view, for that simply go to the list you want and click "pin" in the column settings.
I haven't seen any indication on being able to do the same with a local timeline from another instance though
@dangillmor I tried on mastodeck, and it is possible there, simply add a "local" timeline and select the instance !
@landre yes, and i wish it had features of regular client...a combo would be ideal.
@dangillmor Which features do you miss ? (I use elk as the simple interface does it for me, but I do enjoy discovering new features)
@dangillmor Interesting idea. A column containing the local timeline from another host. It's not immediately obvious that it's possible.

@dangillmor If you want to add the local feed of other instances than yours: I don't think that's possible.
That being said, to pin a new column in the advanced view (which you seem to already have selected), you can do the following (I can't do screenshots on my current device, sorry):

  • for any existing column, click on the top right 'settings' button, then click on "pin": it should go to a new column
  • if a column doesn't exist yet, say you want to follow a hashtag: search for the hashtag in the mastodon search bar; click on the hashtag; it should now occupy the content of your right-most column; do as above to pin it as a separate column.Hope this helps?
@elduvelle I'll give this a try -- thanks.

@dangillmor What state are you in now (another newbie using the advanced interface)?

I have been able to add columns with Home, Local Timeline and Notifications, and a 5th that usually shows Federated Timeline.

You want columns just showing posts from those hosts?

@briansullivan Those are just examples of things I'd like to add. In tweetdeck you can search on something and turn the result into a column.
@dangillmor I can't see any way to do what you want -- these seem like the options for what can be in a column:

@dangillmor @briansullivan

So here I have done a search for #uknews, then I click on the result and it opens in a column, then you select "pin" from the menu, top right...

@chiefoldmist Yes, that's the best workaround I've seen. @briansullivan
@dangillmor As others have said, I don't think pinning or even viewing other instances' local timelines is possible in the standard web view. But you do see this feature popping up in more and more clients, most notably iOS' @[email protected]. It's a pretty popular feature, so you'll likely see it migrated to other clients (both Android and iOS) and then to alternate web views, like Mastodeck. I find it very useful in IceCubes, for sure.

@dangillmor

Please, please, somebody.
