UPDATE: Looks like the admin has posted for first time this year: https://mstdn.party/@[email protected]er/109813159614617478

โš ๏ธ Warning to anyone on the mstdn.party or mstdn.plus servers, recommend you move to another server ASAP. Their only admin is apparently unreachable, and his accounts haven't posted anything since Dec 2022.

You can find a new server at https://joinmastodon.org/servers or https://fedi.garden (the servers listed there have at least two admins and promise to give 3 months warning of any shutdown).

Looking into an issue with mstdn.plus at the moment.

Mastodon
@feditips i hope the admin is alright and that nothing has happened to him :(

@feditips
Yikes! Does anyone have any more info what's going on?

And potential timeframe? Is this a situation to move instances in the next 24 hours, the next few days or the next week?

@Westernspinster @feditips

As noted in https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/109807169067429768 , it's actually January 2023, not December 2022. The silence has been for just over a fortnight.

I haven't actively made attempts to contact, just gone down what's listed at https://jonah.omg.lol looking for activity.

LoL, i thought that word means action game for kids from Epyc Games ๐Ÿ˜€

@Westernspinster @feditips
I guess you should do this as soon as possible. As no estimations are available. Servers can be shut down any moment, if bill for hosting service won't be paid.

But I think You will have couple days to do that. Just don't delay a lot.

@cridge17 ohnos. Might want to migrate before it goes poof.

@feditips

@sayomgwtf: Iโ€™m not sure if this popped up in your timeline, but thought Iโ€™d give you the heads up with a mention. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Edit: Just checked the main post again. Looks like itโ€™s a false alarm. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜… Sorry about the trouble!

@PromptedInk @feditips Oh no, I am honestly hoping the admin is just catching up with real life stuff

Thank you for thinking about me when it comes to these things, I admit I still feel like I know very little of all of it and I often ask for help for pretty much anything haha

@sayomgwtf Youโ€™re welcome! ๐Ÿ˜Š Iโ€™m hoping the same thing regarding the adminโ€”he seems very dedicated to his work (and Mastodon), according to his webpage so I think youโ€™re right.

Glad to be of help! ๐Ÿ˜„

@feditips Crazy idea: make co-administrator mandatory; failing that, make arrangements for a fallback instance mandatory.

@Flies4no1

That's exactly what the Mastodon Covenant does:

https://joinmastodon.org/covenant

All the servers listed on the JoinMastodon site (and also all those listed on my fedi.garden site) have to promise that there is more than one person with admin access.

Mastodon Server Covenant for joinmastodon.org

@feditips What about a fallback plan, an obligation to have a backup set of hardware at hand to take over in case of catastrophic failure of hardware or connectivity? This shouldnโ€™t mean that costs are doubled - backup resources could be shared among a number of instances.
@Flies4no1 @feditips The Covenant requires off-site backups and managed servers or VMs are cheap and easy to get. Having spare hardware sitting idle makes no sense at all.
@Flies4no1 @feditips I believe that most Servers are rented, so if they fail you'll just get the next box from the hoster. For those who do run on owned hardware (like this small instance), you will always have spare parts for your machines that usually fail (fans, ram, power supply..). Even if that fails, there are so many hosters where renting a server is usually a matter of minutes, probably a lot faster than organizing cold/hot spare backup machines.
@datacop @feditips All nice and dandy until real people come to rely on your shoebox of spare fans.
@Flies4no1 @feditips I don't think anybody stores shoeboxes in datacenters ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคซ
Joking aside, from my experience (running servers for 15y and a small community DC for a few years), the thing that's usually lacking the most is time to get the services running again. Hardware usually materializes somehow when needed ;) There are a lot of well-organized sysadmin communities and if everything fails you can easily get refurbished hardware with next-day delivery.
@datacop true, datacenters store spare parts in tape boxes under the raised floor, where spare network patch cables and power cords are also conveniently stored.
@Flies4no1 @feditips

@Flies4no1 @feditips It kinda does if you don't trust the other instances' admins.

Sharing physical hardware requires a lot of trust, because there's a lot of mischief made possible by it (nevermind also accidentals screw-ups that could still have system-wide effect).

@feditips I hope their admin is OK.
Mastodon.world has 3 admins and 7 moderators. So no single point of failure. People are welcome to migrate here if they want.
Anyone is welcome to migrate to https://microblog.club too

@feditips You're a little late. I had to abandon Mstdn.Plus on the 30th once we realized it wasn't connected to the Fed anymore and things like notifications weren't working.

And since it's not connected, I couldn't migrate my account and had to start from scratch. I'm still bummed I lost my followers and keep hoping there's some way I can get them back since they don't know they're not following me anymore.

@feditips Woohoo! I got my followers back!

I don't know if this wizardry is coincidence or programming magic but I like when things work better than expected. I've been promoting Mastodon at other sites telling people to sign up and have even more reason to hype it.

@biobrain It appears that the admin is back and they said they were going to look into mstdn.plus.
@feditips if they do come back, can we reverse the move?

@GamerGrl90

Yes, you can.

You may have to wait a while during a "cooldown" period of 30 days before doing another account transfer though.

@feditips
This kind of thing seems to be the biggest down side to Mastodon, servers closing down, it's an inherent problem, I've already had one shut down on me, makes investing time and effort in this platform seem a little pointless
@photo @feditips in my search for a new server, now, I discovered that a lot of new servers were created in November 2022, to help all the new people fleeing from Twitter and to expand capacity. It might be inevitable that a bunch of brand new instances will also fail, letting down a lot of new people as well. I really liked the local community on mstdn.party. If it really goes down a lot of people might get discouraged.
@photo @feditips OTOH, with Mastodon you have the ability to do something about it if it happens, unlike when a certain entitled, out of touch billionaire fails around.
Heh, I meant "flails around" but "fails around" works so well
@feditips Could you please link https://instances.social in the future instead/with https://joinmastodon.org/servers ? There are not that much of servers in https://joinmastodon.org/servers and therefore I think it is not well maintained. I think many instance owners asked to be on this server list and they are not getting on it. For example this happened to my instance too. On https://instances.social there are way more instances and every server owner can add their instance easily. Best Regards.
Mastodon instances

@dominik @feditips the whole point of the joinmastodon.org list is that there is a covenant, which specifies minimum standards that are supposed to avoid situations like this. Letting any old server on the list is the exact opposite of that.

Unfortunately, it might have failed in this case (I think mstdn.party was on it).

@john @dominik @feditips
You're right, that's why I'm on mstdn.party right now.
@CLAIR you seen this?
@DFFSoundSystem *sigh* no, I'm hardly using this app tbh, not really keen on the interface.
Seems a bit dramatic though? I'll look into the server move when I have time though, thanks for the alert
@CLAIR no worries. Hope youโ€™re having a good weekend.
@DFFSoundSystem Thanxx you too!
@DFFSoundSystem seems I'm still here, I think?
@CLAIR good to know! Hope allโ€™s well with you.
@feditips for anyone who has the skills I recommend setting up your own server. Then you dont have to worry about anything like this.
@feditips
Thanks for the verification - I had heard some rumblings.. took the opportunity to try to find an instance that is a better fit (I didn't really "get it" initially, and just picked one at random...I mean, who doesn't like a "party"?๐Ÿ˜†
Currently on a waitlist. ๐ŸŽถ

@feditips
My advice on that:

1) It's not as hard as you think. Don't worry.

2) After creating your new account and BEFORE beginning the migration process, go to your NEW acct and RT your favorite toots from your OLD acct over to the new account. You will lose access to them from the old acct after the migration process.

3) Then, while the migration process is working, WAIT!

DO NOT DO ANYTHING (no RT-ing, posting, following-- ANYTHING), for at least a few hours (preferably several hours), until it completes its work.

Your followers and following DO copy over, but you may have to manually follow back folks.

@AnneTheWriter1 @feditips
I think the biggest annoyance with the account transfers is exactly that if you've got hundreds or thousands of toots, you'll lose them all in the process.
So the longer you've had your account for, the more you're going to lose...
I really wish they could somehow also transfer the toots with some export...
Or at least provide a way to show them all after the transfers.

It's kind of like losing all your emails: It's great your contacts stay, BUT...

@feditips you have a very nice guide here for changing instances. Unfortunately I got halfway though it and forgot to finish reading, but I eventually read about importing .CSV files and got the people I follow back. Half the confusion was caused by the fact that I have never used Mastodon through my browser before and this couldn't be done through my app. Here's hoping he is alright, and that somebody has an emergency contact number and can get more definitive information.
@feditips I was on one of these servers. I needed to move. I noticed posts weren't updating after a day or two.

@feditips This, i fear, will be the reason Mastodon doesn't take off.

My own feed recently started showing nothing and suggesting I should follow others--yet I am following a number of others.
