Downloaded my Bandcamp Friday haul in Apple Lossless format this morning and uploaded them into iTunes match. (This is an ordeal I’ll write up some other time.)

I’ll describe these in a thread so you can follow along if you like 🧵

Spotify is “good enough” for listening to most of the day, but I’m still caught off-guard sometimes when I hear a familiar track for the first time in uncompressed format. It’s, like, completely different. Not subtle!

And I’m not some audiophile. I’ve been humbled by comparative listening tests at work and am acutely aware of my “tin ears” compared to other people.

Maybe they’re just louder? Crisper? The bass is more… precise feeling? The mix is deeper?

I dunno, man. But it’s worth buying the music anyway.

@nuthatch So you are talking about vinyl here?
@nuthatch (or some other non-compressed format?)
@codedread you CAN buy vinyl, usually, but I buy lossless digital downloads. The worst is CD quality, 16-bit 44.1 kHz. Some bands will distribute 24-bit recordings, or even 24-bit 48 kHz. Apple Lossless, like this band (more than 48 seems excessive to me) https://bdrmm.bandcamp.com/album/bedroom

@nuthatch Cool... I always thought I wouldn't be able to tell... maybe I'll go on a FLAC download spree soon at https://bandcamp.com/codedread. BDRMM is right up my shoegaze alley too!

@codedread you’ve got a bunch of stuff I recognize but haven’t listen to yet 🥳

@nuthatch FWIW, I apparently am still learning how threads work on Masto - I only saw your "Spotify is good enough" post and replied to it - not the entire thread / set of posts above it... Looking them over now, good stuff to explore!

Btw, we should think about catching up irl some time soon!

@codedread yes, I live not far from La Rinconada de Los Gatos now. It’s been a while!
