I just noticed I still own the 'mastodon.press' domain 🤔 I got it a while ago before the massive birb migration but I concluded it was a failed project since it got stamped into the ground

Pretty sure the domain can be used now for journalists or news outlets or something?

I'm not gonna fire up another instance so I am willing to tranfser it! But it has to be used and not sold or something, that makes me feel like a clown

CNN? TWP? New York Times? Anyone?

I don't want any money for it but a donation for the mstdn.social, masto.ai, mastodon.coffee, peertube.tv servers etc would always be welcome ofc

@stux oh snap, there's a mastodon.coffee (server? Federation? I don't quite know all of the lingo yet haha) Is it possible to change thingies without a new account?

I drank two HUGE cappuccino this morning and I'm BUIZZZZZING ☕☕😅

@thetolsonator There is!

(i run it  ) if you would like an invite?

@stux 👉👈 maybe

I only joined this instance because of it being referenced in a YouTube video

@thetolsonator @stux server, instance, and community are common terms to describe Fediverse participating sites.
@stux maybe actually propose it to an independent press
@leftsidestory That was the idea at the time but it got sooo much negative replies that i dediced to put it down and since than the domain has been idle or on a marketplace, i dont even know
@stux 💰💰💰

@n3wjack i think it's on porkbun's marketplace for 5K or something hahaha

Never gonna sell for sure that way

@stux @beautfc anyone in your network who may want to the this on?

@stux Hi @acosta! 👋

I’ve thought a lot about this, too. With Twitter becoming more and more irrelevant, I’m wondering why/when CNN will fire up their own “official” server. I mean, if I can set one up for me and my friends, I’d assume a VERY large Org would be able to do the same.

Or, is engagement over there still “relevant” to CNN folks?

@JPZ @stux @acosta I don't know many non-FOSS brands and advertisers with a presence here. That's CNN's target audience (and Fox's too, to be honest) and where they get their money, so it makes sense they'd follow the money, which hasn't moved from the Fowl Place.
@blake @stux @acosta Seems to still be a pretty long/vague transition period, too. I think just like everyone else, no one knows what to expect. Everyone has become so reliant on different services. It does make sense that they’d follow the money, and I’m sure everyone’s experience there is different now, too. But I mean, I’m just not seeing all of the tweets from the people I follow there. Something’s gotta give.
@stux I wish more news outlets would start posting over here on Mastodon. 😏

@CapeHeaven This seems like an invite right?

*free domains for everyoneeee*

@stux I just followed this "Elon Musk " fella. Maybe he'd be interested.
@Nonog  not in a million years 😇
From the Community | Stanford needs an official Mastodon server

The Twitter/Mastodon saga "might seem like drama that concerns mostly our Silicon Valley neighbors," writes Tomás Guarna, "but it very much concerns us all."

The Stanford Daily

@stux If I might offer a suggestion, hold onto it, setup a non-profit into which people donate $1 a month, then use the proceeds to maintain/improve it. With a sufficiently clear and concise mission statement about its usage requirements, steered by the community-at-large and independent journalists, it could be a real resource.

Thanks :D

@stux pinging @jeff, perhaps you might have some good ideas for a use for the 'mastodon.press' domain!

I mean, I would love to host it but I don't think I would do it justice...

@HMHackMaster @stux

Major news brands will probably end up on their own domains... and I actively urge them to do that.

I don't think that another journalism instance is where the need is right now. Between Newsie, Federated.Press, Journa.host and masthead it's pretty well covered capacity wise.

I can put some feelers out.

@stux
Given the trademark discussions recently, are new sites with mastodon in the name allowed? I know he was grandfathering existing sites, but I didn't pay close enough attention to see if new sites were going to be granted a license.
@stux
You can license it, to control who uses it. The license can revert to you if that person or entity wants to stop running it.
@stux perhaps you might want to run this past @daveleeFT?
@stux @kevinctofel I feel like the Society of Professional Journalists, or the Committee to Protect Journalists, or even the National Press Club, should be in the mix for this!
@stux You might want to add #journalism to toot, or check this list I managed to remember https://journa.host/public
Journa.host

The server for working journalists and news outlets on Mastodon. Home to active & retired journalists, media scholars, and a variety of news and journalism adjacent professionals. #Newstodon

Mastodon hosted on journa.host
@stux Do we not have 3nough news from these same people. Why not independent journos only.
@stux it would be cool if all the global news agencies got together and syndicated from a domain like this

@stux I think you should donate it to joinmastodon.org, they are non-profit after all.

It would be awesome to have mastodon.social, mastodon.online and mastodon.press under same non-profit.

@stux @craignewmark might have some good ideas for this if you’re not already connected 🙏

@stux Given what happened with the last three journalism instances, I suggest giving it to a trans person who’s interested in running a journalism-focused instance.

Preferably actual independent investigative journalism. Maybe reach out to ProPublica, since some of us would like to see them move to a better instance.

@stux that name could be worth a lot.

@stux bit of a tangent but it still feels like the best candidates for masto instances for journalists, is not employers like news orgs, but industry organisations like unions et al. E.g. https://europeanjournalists.org

I know I wouldn't want to tie my mastodon account, even if it was for posting about my profession, to my employers server.
