Why is “wifi enabled” a filter option for a new oven? 👀
@kcarruthers because some people would rather that they can’t connect fire to the internet?

@kcarruthers
This came up not 5 minutes ago when looking at new dishwashers!

Not only wifi but Bluetooth!!!

So I have to stand within 5 meters of it during a wash cycle??

@kcarruthers
Will it help reply guys advise you how to better bake your cake in real time...?! 🤷‍♂️
@kcarruthers So you can turn it off from the comfort of the deck chair in the shed down the bottom of the garden. ;-)
@kcarruthers I’m now thinking about how possible it would be to hack ovens and what you could do with them

@stufromoz @kcarruthers that depends whether the manufacturers treat security as a very high priority*

*you already know the answer to this

@stufromoz @kcarruthers I’m sure I recall a sandbox study of the time from connecting an out of the box wi fi camera to the internet, to first attempts to scan/control, to control achieved, was in the low tens of seconds.
Oven will be the same, likely at first connection, and if not then, when support stops at 2 year.
(Some manufacturers, Miele, say support is guaranteed for 10 years but most make no promises)
@stufromoz @kcarruthers DDoS attacks? Attempts to burn down your house or waste power for lulz?

@mativity @kcarruthers @MacropodCare

Very good but let us also not forget that somewhere around panel one's timeline, someone figured toasters needed to be *streamlined*.

To this very day I cannot fathom what land/air speed designers felt toasters would commonly need to achieve. 🤔😳😂

@mativity @kcarruthers given how things are going it’ll all be “makes toast only when your monthly subscription is paid on time”
@mativity @kcarruthers but first, you have to consent to cookie use (for every toast due to a neglected firmware bug)

@mativity @kcarruthers

All I can think of is Talkie Toaster from Red Dwarf.

@Kilbourn @mativity @kcarruthers I urge you to ask Alexa whether she’d like some toast..(I hope they paid grant/naylor)
@mativity Also, @pluralistic 's "Unauthorized Bread"
@mativity @kcarruthers The overengineering of everyday things.

@mativity @kcarruthers

“Unauthorized bread” by Cory Doctorow comes to mind. What a story. A dystopia that hits you because it’s all too real.

@kcarruthers so you can switch it on to preheat on the way home
But also: nope, not going to be internet-of-things-ing something that can burn down my house.
@talopine @kcarruthers the alternative is an oven with rapid pre-heating that takes 5mins to heat up while then avoiding the unnecessary security risk of a Wi-Fi enabled heating element in your house.
