Of course they knew this was happening, but no doubt it was so masked in business gobbledygook that they were able to practice plausible deniability until a reporter (from the Times) went undercover & joined a crew doing the work...

There is no defence for their claimed 'ignorance' of what was being done!

@ChrisMayLA6 Doesn't matter if the crime was committed by a contractor: the parent company is still responsible for it.

You cannot delegate blame. Centrica simply could not be bothered to actually assess their own contractors.

The problem is the 'don't ask' attitude companies have. They know exactly what they're getting, but hide behind plausible deniability.

Their horror is just performance. They know how damaging this can be, but they also know they can bullshit their way out of it.
