Congratulations to Exxon Mobile for earning $56 billion net profit in 2022. Against all odds, they found a way to make record profits

$6.3 million per hour
$1,750 per second

But don’t worry. That didn’t stop Exxon Mobil from getting subsidies from our government. Since FY2000

Texas gave them $1.4 Billion
Louisiana: $500 Million
The federal government: $5.4 Billion in bailout money

Does anyone want to know why we are speedrunning to climate crisis?

@flexghost Subsidies for the petroleum industry are so embedded in the American system that they’re invisible to the average person. I would guess that the industry considers that one of their greatest achievements.
@DanS finding an itemized verified list is almost impossible
@flexghost That's the problem with being not woke. (i.e. too stupid to connect the dots, even if those dots are all up in your junk screaming at you that there's a problem)
@the_Effekt go to any mainstream media site and count the number of energy industry advertisements

@flexghost Yes exactly. Mainstream media is just feeding the monster.

I see 0 solutions that head off a worst case climate scenario short of every major industry suddenly catching on fire and burning to the ground.

@the_Effekt lol. They’re too big to fail. Sorry, earth

@flexghost We turned out to be no better than any other invasive species that kills its host, then dies along with it.

Oh well, at least we won't have to worry about Covid any longer. 😉

@flexghost why does Congress have zero enforcement of strings attached to any bailouts or subsidies? Tax dollars should help tax payers. It's OUR money
@MJmusicinears congress is the best ROI for any company. Great investment
@flexghost expensive gas is a regressive tax
@flexghost
They think these business subsides mean jobs. Which they do, except never ever enough to pay for the subsidies. But the subsidies are easy compared to investing in anything new, especially politically. Pols get to swipe a pen and say "new jobs" even if it's $500m for 500 jobs. No one does that math.
But it's endemic. Every state, county, plenty of subsidies for jobs that may not even appear in the promised numbers and zero blowback for reneging on the promises.
@flexghost this is criminal. At very least. Get rid of the subsidies.

@flexghost The best part of those #Louisiana tax breaks? They are granted via the Industrial Tax Exemption Plan, which originally gave a state board rights to exempt companies like Exxon from paying large portions of LOCAL property taxes.

While this program brought industry to many areas, it shifted a greater portion of the tax burden onto individuals, many of whom did not see meaningful wage increases and were disproportionately harmed by the pollution of these facilities.

@flexghost is it just coincidence that ALL those states are RED? The entire GOP is fully committed to burning the planet down if they can make a buck on it.

They clearly give zero fucks about what kind of future their own kids will face.

I'm sure when the climate apocalypse happens (pssst.. it already is) they will scream that it is the Dems fault.

We need to send them to Mars ASAP. It is the red planet after all.... They're obviously pretty gullible 🤣

@flexghost ‘cause rich people will eat Benjamin’s and shit crypto when they’re leaving our dead planet on their way to Mars utopia???

@flexghost @mostalive

Those who nominate, dictate.

@flexghost "Climate Crisis" is all about control
@flexghost kickbacks. I suspect there’s kickbacks.
@flexghost my issue is not even the climate issues these subs are to keep the price down but yet price been going up they say there supply chain issue yet when war broke out few days later the price went up so there supply chain got fixed that fast that the price can go up instantly all BS
@flexghost Somehow reminds me of the car industry in Germany... they are bullshitting everybody by betraying with the car emissions but getting loads of subsidies and government support as a reward...
@flexghost Grrrrr 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
@flexghost for those in congress concerned about the national debt and blocking the debt ceiling. Maybe target these subsidies ahead of food stamps?

@flexghost

With more than 10% of #ExxonMobile 's record profit coming from government bailouts, perhaps we should talk about limiting #corporateWelfare

@flexghost It doesn’t do a damned bit of good to develop solar, wind and other alternative energy technologies if we just add them in to our consumption pile and do nothing about reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
People and corporations will consume as much energy as is produced and scream for more. Someone MUST be the adult in the room and say “no.”
@flexghost they can all afford High cool places with plenty of water, they're okay with the climate doing with the unwanted what they really want to do themselves
@CUDA813 it’s not like they care about their kids either
@flexghost how much money does one person really need,
@flexghost Did anyone make them pass drug tests and spend down all of their assets before being given these government handouts?
@flexghost Gotta include the invisible subsidies that enable Big Oil to exist: regulatory agencies turning a blind eye, massive legal loopholes you could navigate an oil tanker ship through, blatant lying and propaganda that goes unchecked, leaks and spills left to destroy acquifers and land, on and on. And of course, so far no penalties for knowingly causing the global climate crisis…

@flexghost
> Exxon Mobile ... found a way to make record profits

Most big corporations have done this, many of them with assistance from state subsidies. This is why we have price rises, not because of modestly rising wages, or less unlivable welfare payments.

#economics #inflation

@flexghost
"Against all odds" - I'm sure that was very tongue-in-cheek, since we were paying astronomical prices at the pump... & even now, after prices eased up, got as "low" as $3.11/gal, they immediately jumped back up to $3.45-$3.89/gal - they realized that people will pay whatever they are charged, now that they can move around freely again- they/we would rather get ripped off at the pump, just to not have to stay home! And the oil companies are gleefully taking it in!

@flexghost

Till the transition happens
OR
Till Hydro-Carbon and Coal combined based energy sources supply less than 50% combined energy for heating, transportation and electricity

this will continue. Otherwise the disruption would be horrid both in human and economic terms.

IMHO we have to focus on how much is being spent on Renewables and energy storage,

@flexghost And this didn't stop Wall Street from trashing their stock for not beating expectations. Yes, investors wanted them to be more rapacious...
@[email protected] the US Supreme Court has assigned "personhood" to corporations, I'd say ExxonMobil is probably the richest person in the world and the have an insatiable appetite for more...more...more!!!

@flexghost @MPgh
I didn’t know until this last election that the oil industry (FOSSIL FUELS!!) are subsidized globally…and I’m certain I’m not the only uninformed person.

We aren’t speedrunning to climate crisis - we are in the thick of it already, with fires, floods, weather catastrophes, famine, forced migration, rising seas, the Sixth Mass Extinction, plus other horrors yet to come.

We’ve had 50 years of solid data, modified only by an accelerated timeline. 😱
