AMD is 'undershipping' chips to keep CPU, GPU prices elevated

AMD joins Nvidia in "undershipping" chips to balance supply and keep prices higher.

@chikorita157 It's almost like capitalism is a race to the bottom: extract the most profit from the least service

@neatchee Pretty much like NVidia unlaunching the RTX 4080 12 GB and calling it the 4070 Ti while making it more expensive and less of a performance jump compared to a 3070 Ti. The 4090 is the only card that is worth the asking price despite being very expensive (a cost of a whole PC during normal times), and they are getting scalped

No wonder I am still stuck on a 980 Ti, since I can’t get Vega 56 working on ESXi as AMD cards don’t play nice with VMWare GPU passthrough.

@chikorita157 Yuck.
I was very lucky and was able to set up a stock-checking bot right when the 3000-series were first coming out and snag a few at MSRP for me and some friends.

I will be running on this 3080 for quite a while, me thinks

@neatchee Doubt the next generation card pricing will get any better.

There is always the hope of it coming down a bit if nobody buys them, but that probably means less GPU advancements in the future if they don’t sell.

I’ll just wait a little while longer and play games at ā€œlowā€ quality settings for a while, although I usually play games on Windows gaming handhelds nowadays. I just want a very powerful highest end GPU to play games at Ultra settings at 1080p (and stream demanding games to a gaming handheld when I’m at home) and be good for the next 7 years.

@chikorita157
Honestly, with how things have been going with advancements over the past few generations, you could probably hit your target for most games with a 2080 or even a 1080Ti if you can find one reasonably priced
@chikorita157 @neatchee I'm a little surprised to hear that you're targeting 1080p with the talk of high-end cards. Are you trying to do ray tracing?
@earth_walker
@chikorita157 I wasn't gonna mention it but I had the same thought lol

@earth_walker @neatchee Yes, I want to do it all, but of course it’s impossible to get a 4090 and they are scalped. The 7900 XTX doesn’t do RT as well as Nvidia, and it most likely won’t work in VMWare ESXi as I couldn’t get a Vega 56 work with the drivers.

The main thinking of getting a top end GPU is not only do the AI stuff, primarily the audio to text but stream games at the highest quality with raytracing at 1080p to any of my handhelds or my M1 Pro Macbook Pro. The prices of GPUs are just stupid high due to lack of competition and they think crypto mining is still a thing, thus they justify these high prices.

I do have 5K monitors, (Apple Studio Display) but I highly doubt these games can play at max settings with RT on at that resolution via streaming.
