And global sea-ice extent has now set a new *all-time* record low...

➡️ Arctic (2nd lowest on record for date) + Antarctic (lowest on record for date)

[Graphics: https://zacklabe.com/global-sea-ice-extent-conc/. Data from https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index for the satellite-era. I am using a 5-day running mean.]

Another view showing the historic lack of sea ice globally right now...
Please note that my graphs are showing *sea ice* - not land ice (e.g. glaciers, ice sheets). Of course, that's declining too. Here's the change in ice mass for Greenland & Antarctica, which I just updated today using the latest data (through November 2022 https://zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-figures/)

@ZLabe What happened to the data from 2018?
@ecomaniac @ZLabe This based on GRACE satellite data. Unfortunately the first GRACE mission ended before the GRACE-FO (follow on) mission was in orbit so there is a gap in the measurements
@ecomaniac This is the pause in between satellite missions for GRACE and GRACE-FO: https://gracefo.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/overview/

@ZLabe This is, uh, not encouraging.

@ZLabe please, politely, i am begging data visualisation folks, as a tritanopic person, use purple through orange-yellow! everyone can see those colours except fully monochromatic people (which there’s not much to help there but vary lightness)

(2003-2022 is all the same colour to me in this graph except 2018 is lighter and still the same colour)
