We're defederating from newsie.social, because they're deliberately ('we don't silence 'different opinions') not moderating a transphobic user that's been reported from several instances and is actively harassing people.

We'll lift this suspension if newsie.social decide that maybe they shouldn't provide a platform for that kind of bigotry and that transphobia is not a 'difference in opinion'.

@[email protected] Because limiting speech you don't like or disagree with isl limiting legitimate public discourse. If it's respectful and in good faith.

@Curator "Because limiting speech you don't like or disagree with [is] limiting legitimate public discourse [if the speech is] respectful and in good faith." I believe this is what Hamlet calls "a plentiful lack of wit." Failing to see through a respectful tone to the bigotry underneath is a failure at doing one's job as a journalist.
@Curator I “do not have permission to view that page” on the link to the transphobe. Can anyone see it, or has it been deleted or made private somehow?
@Curator they seem to be trying the “you didn’t say the magic words” argument now.
@Laukidh @Curator So I guess the consensus is a fediblock? I didn't see the original posts for context.
@Curator I was checking for updates on this and I show tqwhite as suspended now?

@Curator I promise I'm not trying to be obtuse - is the banned person the problem person? That's what I thought was going on.

And is the concensus still defederate even they did move, even if it took a fight? Or no?

@moira It's okay :) Yes the banned person was the problem person, but they only got actioned apparently after someone said the magic 'harassment' words even though the account had been reported a bunch of times from a variety of instances for being transphobic and should have been actioned on that alone. The admin did say he wouldn't moderate transphobia because it's a 'difference of opinion' so possibly only does something if someone says 'harassment'.
@Curator love to you 🥰 for keeping the hate off x
@Curator who is the moderator/originator of newsie.social? They came up early in my feed when I first joined Mastodon (and my default timeline was full of white men chatting with/boosting each other.) I felt I didn’t know enough to “join in” and was interested in other sources. They chase attention/donations a lot.
@Curator "If you don't take a firm stance against bigotry, we'll take a firm stance against you" is such a perfect way to put it. Much respect.
@Curator @mwl transphobia needs to stop. Very well worded
@Curator Here's hoping others follow suit. Those people can stay on Twitter if that's how they want to behave.
@Curator thank you for this!
@Zitronenkaffee @Curator And that's why I like being here so much.
@Curator I am working to come up with an explanation as to why one is an opinion and the other is destructive and should not be tolerated. Right now, I am testing “If your statement includes the belief that a person does not exist as they say they exist, then your statement is not an opinion, it attacks a person’s very being and will not be tolerated.” 1
@Curator To those who respond, “I exist and I believe (category of people don’t exist as they say they do) therefore you are being destructive towards me.” No. Enforcing rules against bigotry does not attack your existence, it attacks your bigotry. 2
@Curator that guy is a real piece of work.
@Curator they should remeber that silencing harasment is not silencing diffrienting opionions and you can have diffrenting opionions withoit harasment. good on you curator
@Curator When "journalists" end up on the Alt-Right side of Freeze Peas they are doing it wrong.

@ProPublica The server you're hosted on is giving a pass to transphobia dressed as journalism, in violation of the Mastodon Covenant, and other servers are starting to defederate from it as a result. You may want to consider talking to them about that or seeking another home.

@Curator

@Curator

Thank you for taking such good care of us.

@Curator
Full support to Mastodon.ART curator on the newsie.social debacle. I had the «pleasure» more than twenty years ago running a journalist mailinglist.

Journalists are the hardest! For several reasons. Talking Heads and so on. Privileged. No more.

In the Fediverse any lazy instance (without proper curating) will become the odd hideout for the so inclined. As always.

Big Deal? No, and Yes: When the somebody on your door is just part of a bigger deal, may be even a nobody.

@Curator democracy.town users and followers should know we’ll be joining this soon if no action is taken.

Reports have been made from here on this matter and another post from the same user implying that Jewish people should quiet down and enjoy Christmas which isn’t how we work.

@Curator Seriously, the journo instances absolutely suck at this.
