This has always been the GOP's strategy:
1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves.
2) Explode the deficit.
3) Demand cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
4) Repeat.
Don't let them get away with it.

@davidkirlewmorris @rbreich came here to say that.
I wrote a few years ago about this con trick, with some speculation about how they get away with it:
Then wait for Dems to TRY to fix idiot Pure BS
@rbreich
The corporations and the GOP have been fighting FDR's economic policies for almost a century.
Made progress with Reagan, but its taken the corporate takeover via lobbists of the congress' and state legislatures' law-writing, ALEC, the creation of the right-wing media ecosystem, etc., to push forward.
@rbreich either..:
— they don’t know the definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result
— it’s about the grift and the quid pro quo, where they skim the money or reap the donations from the 1% and corporations
Either way, it’s not good for the American people
@mindstorm8191 @rbreich Crime rates in Republican dominated rural areas are already through the roof, despite adequate supplies of hydroxychloroquine. 🤷♂️
In my one-time home state of Alabama, citizens have a greater than 1% chance of dying from gun shot, for example. Statistically, it's far safer to have served in Iraq or Afghanistan than to live in some parts of the USA 😢
Another usual strategy of conservatives worldwide is to underfund the services they want to cut, then point at the dysfunction and conclude a deep cut is the only solution.
Watch out!
@rbreich European leftish strategy:
When times are good tax the rich and loan money to finance the welfare state
When times are bad tax the rich and loan money to finance the welfare state
Repeat until voted out of power or losing credit worthiness and net tax payers
Both this and the gop strategy are the way to disaster
I think we can bribe the Capital police to let us sneak into Congress chamber and change the Repubs minds about their moronic ideas. If they really wanted to control spending, they should've stopped trump from giving that whopping tax cut to the filthy rich. The end!
carry on
@rbreich Pretty much the same here (Finland). The economic (and conservative) right complain about the deficit the left made last time, but then end up decreasing taxes and making the deficit larger on their watch anyway, and proclaim victory in a loud voice.
The left comes back in next time and tries to do what they can, but can’t spend without income and more deficit piles up.
And after that, the right comes in and demands privatisation ”because government doesn’t work anymore”. 🤦♂️
