This has always been the GOP's strategy:

1) Cut taxes for the wealthy & corporations by claiming they'll pay for themselves.

2) Explode the deficit.

3) Demand cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

4) Repeat.

Don't let them get away with it.

@rbreich Same for the Tories in my country.

@davidkirlewmorris @rbreich came here to say that.

I wrote a few years ago about this con trick, with some speculation about how they get away with it:

@rbreich It’s ridiculous that it keeps working. I think Jeffries will stare this down. This is our symbolic red line vote. It defines us. If we lose this, we are finished. Dem. Unity. I never thought I’d see the day. #Awe #Respect #ReadingtheRoom
@rbreich people are greedy. They want as much as they can get from the government, but for free.
And they're stupid. If you tell them you're going to save everything the government gives them and cut their taxes at the same time, they'll go for it even if you can't explain how.
@rbreich the worst part is useful idiots who make budget deficits sound like a bad thing rather than being necessary for growth.
@rbreich phrase it this way to reinforce: how many times (and how much) has congress cut the top tax rates vs increased the minimum wage in the last 30 years!?
@rbreich Also, ratchet up national debt so they can hold Democrat administrations to ransom by refusing to raise the debt ceiling.

@rbreich

Then wait for Dems to TRY to fix idiot Pure BS

@rbreich Can our Democratic Representatives please shout this from the rooftops every chance they get. I heard AOC do just that with reporters today.

@rbreich
The corporations and the GOP have been fighting FDR's economic policies for almost a century.

Made progress with Reagan, but its taken the corporate takeover via lobbists of the congress' and state legislatures' law-writing, ALEC, the creation of the right-wing media ecosystem, etc., to push forward.

@rbreich and Canada’s Conservative Party does the same thing!
@rbreich
Most democrats in office are republican-lite. If progressives are the only moderates, the whole government skews conservative. I’m not a fan of Sanders who hoards wealth and doesn’t do more than lip service to changing the systemic injustices. Who can we look up to to see true progressive liberal action??? We are in desperate need of universal health care and housing.

@rbreich either..:

— they don’t know the definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result
— it’s about the grift and the quid pro quo, where they skim the money or reap the donations from the 1% and corporations

Either way, it’s not good for the American people

@rbreich But what if we actually did let the Republicans cut all of the Social Security and Medicare ... perhaps just in Republican dominated states?
@cpurdy @rbreich Crime rates would skyrocket. And when that doesn't work, lot of people would die. But the GOP would keep blaming the Dems, and their voters would keep believing them

@mindstorm8191 @rbreich Crime rates in Republican dominated rural areas are already through the roof, despite adequate supplies of hydroxychloroquine. 🤷‍♂️

In my one-time home state of Alabama, citizens have a greater than 1% chance of dying from gun shot, for example. Statistically, it's far safer to have served in Iraq or Afghanistan than to live in some parts of the USA 😢

@rbreich
Here in the UK we have the exact equivalent in the Conservative Party.
who are currently in Government.

@rbreich

Another usual strategy of conservatives worldwide is to underfund the services they want to cut, then point at the dysfunction and conclude a deep cut is the only solution.

Watch out!

@rbreich European leftish strategy:
When times are good tax the rich and loan money to finance the welfare state
When times are bad tax the rich and loan money to finance the welfare state
Repeat until voted out of power or losing credit worthiness and net tax payers

Both this and the gop strategy are the way to disaster

@rbreich I’m sorry, I’m on SSI and I keep reading your posts daily, yet, “What, pray tell do you suppose we actually do about it?” I didn’t vote for them, but they keep getting elected! They’ve obviously got more power than just us, sitting here reading social media. I’m betting many of their senior base, don’t believe it will comeback to hurt them…Nope, bcz it’s people like me who will be on the chop 1st. I know it all too well. Reading “Don’t let them…” is rubbing salt inmy open wound

@rbreich

I think we can bribe the Capital police to let us sneak into Congress chamber and change the Repubs minds about their moronic ideas. If they really wanted to control spending, they should've stopped trump from giving that whopping tax cut to the filthy rich. The end!
carry on

@rbreich and when the starved agency or bureau fails, privatize it.
Then when it goes bankrupt, vote loan guarantees for it - to beef it up.
Then cut funding again, demand an end to government "interference" and ...
Let it fail, again.
The GOP is a nest of parasites.
@rbreich and increase corporate welfare
@rbreich It’s way worse than that. In every way possible. And all of this is still happening on Biden’s watch.

@rbreich Pretty much the same here (Finland). The economic (and conservative) right complain about the deficit the left made last time, but then end up decreasing taxes and making the deficit larger on their watch anyway, and proclaim victory in a loud voice.

The left comes back in next time and tries to do what they can, but can’t spend without income and more deficit piles up.

And after that, the right comes in and demands privatisation ”because government doesn’t work anymore”. 🤦‍♂️

@rbreich it’s also the strategy of the current Tory government in the UK 🤬
@rbreich it is hard not to feel hopeless. They keep getting away with it. We vote. We call. We write. We give. We vote again. Nothing seems to change.
@rbreich unless you are rich or a corporation?
@rbreich
All Republicans have is frkn Groundhog Day.
@rbreich add "fascist shenanigans"
@rbreich you left out the part where they then point and say "See?! Government is broken! It's not even solvent!"
