I often think of this quotation, by the composer Frank Wilhoit, when police violence is in the news:

โ€œConservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:
There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.โ€

@leigh I have a strong preference for his free conclusion: "The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone"
@leigh Where does the law come from? Rule by law is just rule by lawmakers.
@leigh It also clarifies why OPS allowed the occupation to last so long, versus, say, their night time raid on racialized protesters who were only blocking one intersection.
