Masto-do or Masto-don’t? • The Breakroom

Let’s just say that January 12th was expected, yet still surprising. We knew the cutting and slashing at Twitter would affect us at some point, but how we’d get eviscerated was an unknown. Many other people saw it was coming as reality began to sink in at the end of October. We’ve been asked, countless […]

Iconfactory Blog
@chockenberry I gotta say that there are an increasing number of good Mastodon clients that feel a lot like Twitter clients, but I would love to see somebody like Iconfactory take the time to find a new way to interact with ActivityPub - new interactions, new features, new integrations. Can’t wait to see what you all do next!

@jemaleddin @chockenberry
There are definitely people working on that, I don’t know if you’ve seen this post yet:

https://mastodon.social/@terhechte/109762188190735435

But it’s someone presenting the Mastodon feed in the format of iMessage, which is…intriguing.

@Wraithe @chockenberry I did see that! (And I assume Craig did too.) That’s the kind of energy we need - and the thoughtfulness and polish of Iconfactory would be great applied to something like that. (But I bet there are a dozen other interaction styles nobody has tried!)
@chockenberry you could call it Meetie. Or maybe Meatie? I dunno just spitballin’ here

@chockenberry I like this approach overall. I have a feeling a lot of the ideas of the “Fediverse” are going to get challenged and maybe changed over the next few months. Iconfactory can come out and either implement a thoughtful version of Mastodon, or even dip into apps that aren’t getting much love right now like Pixelfed and do an something tuned to that.

In any case, good luck, and I’m loving the heck out of Frenzic!

@chockenberry What I’d really like is apps which run on the Fediverse which can effectively replace Instagram and TikTok where people can run their own backends and select any apps which support them. Perhaps make some of the app features Open Source to support a baseline of consistency.
@chockenberry Masto-do. Fill the gap, and bring accessibility. And open API guys, what a temptation!! There’s a bunch of good ideas in the air and other already live, don’t be late to the party 😜
@chockenberry I look forward to giving you money for whatever you might end up doing in this space. 😁
@chockenberry so many fine details I liked in Twitterific I found nowhere here. I hope you bring the same goodness here.
@paul @chockenberry I got so excited at work I dropped my phone and idk how to explain I’m excited about mastodon clients 🤣
@paul @chockenberry even more excited about a platform that integrates the fediverse in one place. #mastodon

@chockenberry Must-o-do-it!

(Btw, your musings on the possibilities of Activity Pub on The Talk Show were really thought-provoking)

@chockenberry For me, my experience of using Twitter from the start has been inseparable from Twitterriffic. The only reason I ever sidestepped Twitterriffic was out of necessity—to check on the notifications occasionally that Twitter didn't make available to third-party clients over the last few years.

I'm trying Ivory for now, but oh how I wish that Twitterriffic could resurface with the same UIs (iOS and macOS), just atop a different protocol and service.

@chockenberry Here for whatever you end up working on. I loved Twitterrific. Something broader than just Mastodon would be really cool.
@chockenberry
A mastodon debate?
A Masto-
🤔
… a Mastodon Debate and there is no shorter version of that phrase.
@chockenberry I'm extremely looking forward to whatever Iconfactory does next, but please change the background or the text color on the blog. Gray on gray is really hard to read, and I fortunately still have nearly perfect vision. Original in the middle, very janky ideas on the outsides:
@charlesesmith That’s not in our CSS. The background is MUCH lighter. Maybe a filter or something in a user style sheet?
@chockenberry well damn. I’ll check my side, I tried a couple of browsers but I do run similar extensions in each. Glad it’s just me

@charlesesmith It looks like it’s trying to simulate a dark mode. That’s a long-term goal but not so simple with an creaky old WordPress theme.

Does https://apps.iconfactory.com render OK (it supports dark mode).

@chockenberry well this is embarrassing. Yeah that works and the blog looks right on iPhone. Sorry to waste your time, keep up the good work!
@charlesesmith No worries. We’ve been fussy over how that site looks for 25 years, no reason to stop now 😀
@chockenberry It’s why so many of us can’t wait for whatever fedi-client @Iconfactory creates. Y’all are fussy.
@chockenberry please, accept the challenge. I’m so curious what you would come up with. Especially the mascot. Ollie was an easy concept, birds are cute. But a mastodon!
@chockenberry Very excited to see what you can come up with. It does feels like there’s a major evolution waiting to happen in the fediverse.
@chockenberry whichever you decide we’ll be watching. Keep up the good work.
