ALRIGHT! My petition to the government of Canada, to allow the claiming of asylum by trans people by reason of their country passing trans-eliminationist laws, is now LIVE.

https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-4268

If you are a Canadian Citizen, or a Permanent Resident, you are eligible. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN IF YOU ARE NOT IN THESE CATEGORIES.

Feel free to post the link anywhere you think it'll get traction. I'm modestly hoping we can get 10k signatures in 120 days.

Fly, my pretties! Fly!

ETA: hashtags, reboosting; we are currently approaching 30k signatures!

Petition e-4268 - Petitions

@oldladyplays its sad that this is becoming so necessary esp with the crap being passed here in the US.
@oldladyplays shared, and shared on Facebook.
@oldladyplays I’m Canadian and I signed it. It’s not perfect here but we are a safer harbour than many places
@oldladyplays I'm not in one of the categories, but I've happily boosted x
@ArnotSmith did you get Canadian citizenship at all? I'm assuming J&A do, at least, but they're not on the fediverse as far as I know.
@oldladyplays They don't make it easier for Canadian citizens living abroad to sign, but I got there.

@oldladyplays

This is a great idea. I would love to do something like that here in the US, but the way things are going here many of us will be seeking asylum in Canada.

@oldladyplays this might wind up being my best chance of moving to Canada πŸ™ƒ

@oldladyplays Signed!

As an aside - Very neat that this site provides RSS feeds for petitions.

@oldladyplays boosted for you but can't sign due to being the wrong side of the Atlantic
@oldladyplays I just *re*-boosted this one because it's so damn important that I wanted the afternoon crowd to see it.
@oldladyplays sad this is necessary, so glad you are doing it! You! I will alert Canadian pals
@oldladyplays wishing you success from Oz.
@oldladyplays
Is this Petition e-4268? Because there's no information about that petition in the file.
@oldladyplays Thank you for doing this. Boosted and signed. ✊
@oldladyplays As the parent of a trans child in Texas, I approve of this message.
@oldladyplays I'm neither trans nor Canadian, but I can boost the bandwidth.
@oldladyplays How about non-resident citizens (dual or ex-pats, not currently eligible to vote due to non-residency)?
The petition wording says residents.
@oldladyplays Signed! I have some friends in the US and the UK that could really use the ability to high tail it here if necessary.
RT with CW. Please consider if you’re Canadian. Retoot avec avertissement de contenu. Veuillez considΓ©rer si vous Γͺtes canadien.
@oldladyplays Thanks for this! It was a little confusing that it said "residents of Canada", but I was able to sign it no problem as a citizen with a foreign address.
@oldladyplays I would move to Canada in a hot-fucking-minute.

@oldladyplays
Thank you! Signed and shared, much like many others. Looks like it's taking off: 2,351 so far!

(Also hi from Kitchener! Were you as pissed about the 20% voting rate as I was?)

@oldladyplays thanks and good luck, we may need this in a few years
In honor of Petition e-4268, thank you Canadians <3

@oldladyplays thank you for doing this Cait. We can’t say we protect gender identity in our human rights code and not act when other countries infringe those rights. Time for Canada to walk the walk.
@oldladyplays signed and shared with my local trans community! ✨✨
@oldladyplays I think we're about to hit this *well* quicker than 120 days.
@oldladyplays I'm a Canadian citizen living abroad, but that petition requires a Canadian phone number for some reason so I can't sign it or I have to make up a bogus phone number.
@oldladyplays have been promoting your petition on Twitter and FaceBook AND I wrote to Egale Canada to see if they might do something. Solidarity!! :)

Tomorrow at 3pm on CKMS #CommunityConnections I'm talking with Cait Glasson @oldladyplays ostensibly about the Government of Canada petition to grant asylum to trans people who are persecuted for their gender in other countries. But we'll probably talk about many other #SocialJustice issues too.

If you're in #WaterlooRegion tune in to CKMS-FM 102.7 at 3pm, listen online at https://radiowaterloo.ca/listen

There may be a live YouTube stream too.

@oldladyplays I can't sign, being a citizen of the United States of Abominable, but good luck!

@oldladyplays

Boosting the Jegaysus out of this and sending links to some of my Canadian peeps across platforms...

@oldladyplays
A modest estimate indeed, considering that it's now at 142,500 signatures. Turns out a lot of Canadians do actually think trans rights are human rights!
@oldladyplays
Apparently there's talk of this in Norway too. Fucking hell.
(Not that it's happening, but that it's needed.)

@oldladyplays

just ready through the response to this and it's so disheartening

completely ignores the specific statements that allude to Canada's history of denying asylum requests from those persecuted by the specific countries mentioned
