Everyone Wants Your Email Address. Think Twice Before Sharing It.

Your email address has become a digital bread crumb for companies to link your activity across sites. Here’s how you can limit this.

@samgai clown world out there
@samgai That’s like „Click here to install the mouse.“ in the 90s…

@samgai Ha, that's perfect.

Is there any way to block these types of elements in one's browser, and prevent them from popping up in the first place? They're really a nuisance on a lot of sites.

@samgai This is why we never fix anything; Public Awareness isn't enough. We need Self Awareness, too.

@samgai
🎵 oh the irony, everyone wants my email addy....

I'll show myself out.

@samgai the article for some reason only mentions Mozilla and Apple as Pseudonomous Email Providers - lacking, for example, is #simplelogin.

@samgai

I literally just asked 2 very old friends their email and sent 3 shared facts with the request to prove it was me in my request.

@samgai I want to add more favorites on this toot but it just keeps turning it off and on.
@samgai same goes for phone numbers... Think 3 times before sharing that.
@publictorsten @Bine that’s what “hide my email” and often just reader view are for.

@Bine @publictorsten Usually I would use https://12ft.io. But looks like they've caved..

"12ft has been disabled for this site"

12ft

@edphones @Bine @publictorsten there's a pretty effective addon I use on Firefox called "Bypass Paywalls". I think it has a chrome version too if you use that.
@publictorsten @Bine FYI, the spamgourmet.com service is still up and running and is perfect for creating disposable forwarding email addresses that self-destruct after a user-specified number of emails.

I cringe every time I hear a news outlet say "like & follow us on facebook et al..."

Who will watch the watchers?

@Bine

Also... don't forget to download our app!

@Bine @publictorsten ah yes, the classic Freudian slip
