Meanwhile at Meta...

Donald Trump is being welcomed back onto Facebook and Instagram.

What's the lesson here?

Don't trust Big Social with safeguarding the public good.

Ending Suspension of Trump’s Accounts With New Guardrails to Deter Repeat Offenses | Meta

We'll be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.

Meta

You think the the #TwitterMigration was big?

Eventually, there may be a #MetaMigration.

It's entirely possible that many people from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will find their way to the Fediverse -- especially if a MAGA takeover goes into full swing!

Is the Fediverse prepared for that possibility?

No, Mastodon is not a "one size fits all" solution for the Fediverse.

We need to build more federated solutions for different use case scenarios.

People who are used to Facebook will want something similar to Facebook.

People who are used to Instagram will want something similar to Instagram.

We need to prepare for an influx of new users to Friendica and Pixelfed because those are the platforms most similar to Facebook and Instagram!

Additionally, we will need to build up audio and video services for the Fediverse because so much of Meta is now based on reels and live video.

I'm doing my part by building #GreatApe -- though it's in alpha, and not ready for production yet:

However, that only takes care of the software aspect.

We'll need lots of instances!

The Fediverse also needs more innovation.

It's one thing to clone popular services.

But we need to build creative and innovative new functionality that has yet to be created by a proprietary service!

Yes, it's nice that Mastodon, Friendica, and Pixelfed can replace some Big Social services.

Yet we also need to build features that are so compelling, Big Social users see the instant appeal of the Fediverse.

@atomicpoet working on it ;)
@mayor Tell me more 🙂
@atomicpoet well, my plan is to offer mastodon services connecting to LDAP server to be able to offer other services that tie in to your Mastodon Instance account on my systems.
@atomicpoet Also the goal should be is to make it easy for anyone to have their own instance. Perhaps in the near future.
@DaniEhm @atomicpoet IMO it will never work. I mean for regular people, that they will have their own instances, but simplified installation might attract more people with IT related knowledge.
Even if the installation would be one click/command, you still need to have a domain, you still need to set it up, you still need some server to run it. It's too much for regular Joe who just want to connect with his kids.

@djvdq @atomicpoet

True. Months later, I’m realizing this as things stand now. There’s also dealing with Mastodon updates or troubleshooting if your server acts up. Oh well.

@atomicpoet The sad news is that the only people paying attention to social media stats, are the jerks trying to suss the effectiveness of their ad placements. with no ads, masto flies beneath the radar. it’s both a blessing and a curse.

focus on the blessing part

Meta reinstates Trump on Instagram and Facebook ahead of 2024 election

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg wrote in a blog post that the former president will face “heightened penalties” if he breaks the social media giant’s content rules.

The Washington Post
@theandil Yes, see the beginning of this thread.
@atomicpoet what’s this do better than PeerTube and/or Owncast for video?
@atomicpoet reasking as it seems you’ve moved instances since the post I replied to…
@genebean It uses a specific kind of P2P tech to deliver video thus cutting costs. It’s also a different kind of social network entirely.
@atomicpoet where’s the best place to read about it?
@genebean Probably just follow @atomicpoet. I’ll be releasing more info hopefully next week.
@atomicpoet
Now "retired" long time graphic designer/illustrator (now fine artist) here. I'm on Mastodon via my MacBook Pro.
So, FWIW, IMHO...
Too much space between the lines of your posts. Too much space around text/images in general. Serif typefaces easier to read than sans serif. I'd guess some folks find the posts hard to read. (I'd get a kick out of various instances each having their own choice of typeface.)Too much white space in general.
I'd be happy to throw in and help if wanted.
@atomicpoet I think that the front end software as in a mobile app or even a browser experience tied into the Mastodon API might work, but I don’t want to turn this into a Instagram, and I think a lot of people will agree with me. The whole entire point of this experiment is to reduce algorithmic bullshit & unbalanced influence.
@TransitBiker For a long time, Instagram didn't have a relevancy algorithm. The feed was chronological. That was when Instagram was at its best.
