#UKBreakbeatHistory

1992 was a funny year. The Hardcore rave scene was getting ridiculous, loads of clown music and white gloves everywhere. We also saw the emergence of 'Happy Hardcore'.

I hated Happy Hardcore. I was not a happy youth...

Fortunately I wasn't alone and a more drum focussed music came along. I appreciated the switch away from the clown music as we sought warehouses in South East London and tuned to #RushFM

@mxtthxw I fucking hate happy hardcore

I grew up thru thru the 90s & saw the dicks with hats & gloves. My brother was heavy into happy hardcore & would play it at stupid hours in the morning

I did listen to some for a bit just to get a grasp of it. But like a lot of music - it just felt the same & had no progression

Personally I preferred drum and bass since that had more a progression of different styles of it. Plenty of different vibes to dip into

@mxtthxw ooh, quite the spicy take there! 1992 is often described as the peak of breakbeat hardcore (or rave in general). Yes there was a ton of guff too but it pales in comparison to the good stuff. Personally, my preferred moment was in 1993 as "darkside" peaked, although the seeds ofc were there in 1992 (and before) such as with the excellent track you shared. Funnily enough, despite being a darkside and jungle guy, I really quite liked early happy hardcore.
@mxtthxw Darkcore is good, real darkness. I think a lot of those tunes hold up pretty good. But the vocal overkill on the more happy tracks are so dated now but even back then they were just too cheesy. But the the dark hardcore, still gets me every time.
@mxtthxw I still don't like happy hardcore. It's like xymox on speed and anti-drpressants
