Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution

Teachers in Manatee County, Florida, are being told to make their classroom libraries — and any other "unvetted" book — inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The new policy is part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It is based on the premise, promoted by right-wing advocacy groups, that teachers and librarians are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

UPDATE: This is also happening in Duval County, FL.

A principal sent this note: "We are being asked to restrict classroom libraries...sadly you will need to remove student access...I will be the one with a felony if we are found in violation...I wish I was making this all up"

Keep in mind, teachers and principals can be charged with a THIRD DEGREE FELONY.

The Florida Department of Education just published a training reminding teachers of that.

You know what else is a third-degree felony in Florida?

Yesterday, a "Community Note" was appended to my tweet, suggesting my reporting was inaccurate.

In fact, it was the "Community Note" that was completely inaccurate

The note misinformed Twitter users and undermine a critical report on DeSantis' policies

Twitter can't handle the truth

On Monday, Popular Information reported that the Manatee County School District instructed teachers to make their classroom libraries inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The directive was issued as part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It was based on the premise that teachers are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

@juddlegum

Journalists are essentially voting for Elon’s policies by staying with Twitter.

@jgordon @juddlegum Soccrates was offered the chance to avoid his execution by renouncing his words thoughts and beliefs. Question what is he but his words thoughts and beliefs and viewed the offer as truly a death of that which he was. He drank the poison to preserve his words thoughts and beliefs or we likely would not know his teachings. The journalists that stay are giving up who they are to remain on twitter becoming not the resistance but part of the propaganda that is acceptable.
@jgordon @juddlegum exactly they have blood on their hands

@jgordon @juddlegum

Anyone who continues to use Twitter is voting "yay" on Musk's policies.

@juddlegum Reality itself is biased against the political right.

Good luck holding powerful people accountable on a site owned by a powerful person who doesn’t want accountability.

@juddlegum I just realized that Judd Legum can also be parsed as Juddle Gum, which is how I’m going to refer to him from now on.
@juddlegum reality has a left wing bias, as they say. Along with empathy and compassion having left wing bias. That is what Elon is complaining about.
@juddlegum so why are you still on twitter? Unless a company is paying you to monitor it and report on it, there’s zero reason to still be there
@juddlegum GET OFF TWITTER!! It’s nothing more than Musks Nazi platform. Move completely off. There’s Post and Mastodon. And SOON Christopher Bouzys new platform, SPOUTABLE!
