Currently reading Ted Gioia's History of Jazz (or maybe it should been called Things that Can Kill You Before the Age of 35).
'Sadly, he died young aged only...'
'He succumbed aged only 28...'
'The disease which killed him prematurely...'
'Dead at 26...'
'Her lifestyle finally took its toll...'
'Died before his 29th birthday...'
'Died aged only 32...'

and so on
(very good book, btw)

Yeah, so many. Same with the early rock'n'rollers. It's amazing how good they got in the few years available to them. I've just discovered Booker Little (died 23) who played with the better known Eric Dolphy (died 36) and John Coltrane (who made it to the grand old age of 40). None of their deaths were the result of the usual suspect, drug abuse, although perhaps life on the road took its toll in other ways. Segregation and the US medical system won't have helped.
