History is a Gift#OTD in 1919, a team of IRA members ambushed royal British police to acquire the weapons and explosives they were escorting, killing two officers. Since the event occurred on the same day that the revolutionary Irish parliament declared sovereignty over the whole island, this event is often viewed as the first skirmish of the Irish War of Independence.
