Since the Citizens United ruling in 2010, dark money spending has skyrocketed.

In 2012, outside groups spent over $300 million.

In 2020, outside groups spent over $3 billion.

Our electoral system has been turned into a playground for big corporations & the super rich.

@rbreich And every President moans with gnashing of teeth that they’ll eliminate it but it’s still here bigger and badder Your politics is quite a joke isn’t it
@rbreich citizens United is incredible return on investment for corporations. To our detriment.
@flexghost @rbreich It should really be called "Corporate United".
@rbreich
It’s legalized bribery.
@rbreich And the Not So Supreme Court will NEVER overturn this corrupt ruling.
@rbreich This is what plutocracy looks like.
@rbreich And that's who most of our representatives work for.

@rbreich Citizens United's ruling that says "money is speech" actually means "the voice of those who have more money is worth more than those who have less".

It literally means the will of the rich is more important than the will of the non-rich.

Taken to the extreme, it means if there was one man who has more money than everyone else in America, this man would, legally, be KING.

Citizens United ENDED AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.

@rbreich It always has been! Back room deals are now in the open( with restrictions) with cover from the courts!
@rbreich America! The most legal corrupt government in the world where anyone can buy a politician.

@rbreich "Modern society has created a class of artificial beings who bid fair soon to be the masters of their creator. It is but a very few years since the existence of a corporation controlling a few million dollars was regarded as a subject of grave apprehension, and now this country already contains single organizations which wield a power represented by hundreds of millions. they already are establishing despotisms which no popular effort will be able to shake off..."

CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS

@rbreich Remember Alito shaking his head at the SotU?
@rbreich In their book “Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt”, #ChrisHedges & Saco portray “inverted totalitarianism” as a system where “corporations have corrupted & subverted democracy & where economics bests politics. Every natural resource & living being is commodified & exploited by large corporations to the point of collapse as excess consumerism & sensationalism lull & manipulate the citizenry into surrendering their liberties & their participation in gov’t”. Ring any bells?
@rbreich it’s all so corrupt. All and every person/ party-
