Found this sterling sliver band on the street #Ōtepoti coordinates #Antarctica
I'd love to know the story.
Can you help me get it back on the right finger?
@KateT it might be a leg tag off a migratory bird with the lat/long the place of origin or tagging. Does your Antarctica tag mean the location is there?
@alanhesketh Hi Alan, yes, the coordinates are for Antarctia. It is silver, and fits on my finger..... I guess birds do get that big!
@KateT
Could post on your behalf in a Facebook News group
@RedRobyn if you're willing to be an intermediary, yes please :)
@KateT
Popped it on one of the bigger, and friendlier "news" groups. I'm a bit of a quiet no mates there, so the algorithm might hide it. Fingers crossed
@KateT
A suggestion from that group.
If the ring has a silversmith makers mark a photo of that might be v. useful on thar group
@RedRobyn thanks for the idea. No makers mark. Just 925. It’s a cheap ring that someone’s had stamped
@KateT
I'll suggest they try, but with that caveat
@KateT did you try going to the address?
@Br3nda The coordinates on the ring are for a tiny bay on the peninsula (not saying exactly where, as I'll use it as proof of ownership, should the joyful day arrive!) #Ōtepoti #Antartica #lostring
@KateT what's the "antartica" tag about?
@Br3nda sorry. Can’t spell. The coordinates are for Antarctica. And not near any human activities
@KateT know someone who works down there, will try shoot them a message and see if they might know
List of disasters in Antarctica by death toll - Wikipedia

@zl2tod Thanks Mark. That's an interesting lead.... Drakes' Passage is pretty close.
@zl2tod Thanks!
@KateT
Tried DM earlier but they don't seem to work for me.
@zl2tod Thanks Mark. A dead end unfortuntaly, but good idea. We did have a cruise ship in a few days ago that goes to Antarctica, so it's quite possible the owner is far far away now!
@KateT May not have been worn be a human... that looks similar to a tracking band they put on birds.
@jasonmauer we’ve considered that. But no one tags birds with silver, as far as i can tell. Plus imagine the logistics. Either catching a bird and stamping the data on the band of silver. While the bird waits patiently. Or. Stamping a whole lot of bands and wait patiently at the site for a bird to arrive?

@KateT yeah, the GPS coordinates don't seem to make much sense for bird tracking.

What are the coordinates, by the way? That may help in tracking down the owner.

@jasonmauer @KateT I was thinking the exact same thing. Penguin leg band, maybe?
@KBaileyBooks @jasonmauer You mean like a rapper penguin who's lost his bling? It's sterling silver :)
@KateT
@KBaileyBooks @jasonmauer
That's a Penguins of Madagascar episode
@KateT
If you look up the coordinates the location may be a clue.
@KateT 925 typically indicates the quality of the silver (ie that it’s sterling quality). Hope you’re able to find the owner.
@KateT Print out a note with the text "Ring found, please report to:" and place it where you found it. 🤷🏼
@KateT I'm wondering if it might be a penguin tracking band. Or possibly another animal. The series of scuffs along the upper edge seem to indicate it was pecked at trying to get it off.
@KateT Nobody has said the obvious of taking it to the police, yet I fear that might be the end of it for something so unusual. I’m not a member of the Dunedin News Facebook group but if you know someone who can weather the awful comments in there that would be worth a shot. I know a well connected person who might be a good lead. I’ll pass it on to them privately and see what they say.
@gurubob Thanks Bob. The police station will be the next step. It's been posted on the DN community news FB page, and the person was happy to be an intermediary for me :)
I've also been in contact with the geology dept.
@KateT real keen to hear the end result, keep us posted ☺️
@gurubob will do - it's been fun (if not a bit repetitive!)
@KateT @gurubob
Actually on one of the splitter news groups. I'm not brave enough for the original....
Understand I would have had trouble joining anyway, due to my undesirable friends
@RedRobyn @gurubob I appreciate it. Just whatever you're comfortable with. I'ts probably time to hand it in to the police lost property.... there are only so many ways you can say, no it's not a leg tag, no you don't need the exact coordinates!
@KateT
Yes, probably. A likely place for the owner to have been enquiring
Fortunately most of the people on the fb group are just reacting and moving on. A jeweller who uses coordinates has been suggested, but I imagine you are right and the base is mass produced.
There's a tramping Facebook group? Might find the adventurous people.
@KateT Google Lens brought up similar pictures of male engagement and wedding rings. They're sometimes known as gap rings. Wolf & Badger sell one that looks quite similar to the one you found. I'll bet they were engaged on an Antarctic cruise or expedition that stopped at those coordinates.
Kia ora Matt @mattjhodgkinson
My thoughts exactly :) Etsy sells them too - so not monetarily valuable, but possibly of huge sentimenal value!
@KateT What geographic location do the GPS coordinates refer to?
@martincampbell2 Mōrena Martin, I'm not sharing the exact location, as it'll provide proof of ownership if day comes. It is in Antarctica though, which, for the person who it belongs to, will be enough..
@KateT Isn't it an engraved geo location?
@vegos_f06 Yes it is. It's in Antarctica. It's key ownership ID info, so I'm not sharing where exactly. :)
@KateT The edges look like maybe it was cut off the finger in an emergency situation like an injury causing the finger to swell so the ring couldn’t be removed normally. Maybe check with the lost-&-found departments of any nearby emergency departments or urgent care clinics?
@gorfram thanks Evelyn, that grim thought has been suggested! I don't think so though.... the edges are actually quite smooth. Pretty sure it's just an adjustable ring.

@KateT @gorfram FWIW, If it had been cut off (I’ve gone through that) there’s be little saw abrasions (there’s a special tool). If cut with a metal shear /tin snips type tool, there’d be waffling bend at one or both edges.

I hope you’re able to locate the owner.

@KateT What are the coordinates on the band? could they help you find the owner, perhaps?
-F
@Hearth hi. They mark a spot in Antarctica... so probably a momento from that place. Hopefully something marvellous like an engagement, and not something tragic like a ship wreck! Whatever the story, it will be instantly recognisable to the owner.
@KateT I guess that was a long shot, it's unlikely you'd put the coordinates of your house on a ring
-F
@Hearth LOL. The narrative changes completely when Antarctica is involved!
@KateT maybe it belongs to an unusually intelligent penguin!
-F
@Hearth a big scary one with a bling fettish!
@Hearth @KateT
One of the fb leads that didn't pan out was to a group of flatmates that all had rings with the coordinates of the house they shared.
@RedRobyn @Hearth Yeah, there aren't many people flatting in Antarctica. Imagine the heating bills!
@KateT @Hearth Could you actually type out the coordinates please, instead on just saying "antarctica"...
@KateT
@Hearth
Maybe it's a clue, you need to go to the coordinates to find the next one
