There are three main timelines on here:

๐Ÿ  Home - Posts from people you follow, plus posts featuring hashtags you follow

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Local - Public posts from people on your server

๐ŸŒŽ Federated - Public posts from people on any server

On the official Mastodon app, Local is known as "Community" and can be accessed by clicking the magnifying glass ๐Ÿ” and scrolling across to the Community tab.

There are no algorithms hiding or moving stuff. You see all the posts for each feed in chronological order.

@feditips does each mastodon (or other app) instance have itโ€™s own database?

@thatscrazy each mastodon (or fediverse software) instance does has it's own database, for that instance.

it's required for keeping track of users on your instance.

@feditips is there a way of pausing the federated feed to be able to scroll through & read it? It is constantly updating, obviously!

@helenclayton

Yes, there is! It's called slow mode.

On the website, go to โš™๏ธ Preferences, tick the "Slow Mode" box, then click "Save Changes".

This will stop new posts from appearing. When you're ready to see new posts, click the link at the top to reveal them.

@feditips ah-ha! Thank you! Found it & will give it a go!
@feditips hmm, Iโ€™ve got it saved to slow mode but itโ€™s still whizzing by ๐Ÿค”.
@feditips Iโ€™ve done it again & it worked! Thank you!
@feditips I can follow hashtags? How is that done?
@salem @feditips I have the same question! How do you follow hashtags?
How To Use Mastodon and the Fediverse: Basic Tips | Fedi.Tips โ€“ An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips Well, that's easy! Thank you
@salem @feditips I have the same question about following hashtags.
@feditips Thank you so much. I appreciate all of your help!
@feditips not exactly. Federated timeline shows you posts of any federated user that is being followed by anyone on your instance. It's not everyone.

"On the official Mastodon app, Local is known as "Community" and can be accessed by clicking the magnifying glass ๐Ÿ” and scrolling across to the Community tab."

I discovered this accidentally and still thought I was missing some difference between the two. Thanks for calling this out. I wonder if there will be more homogenization between the mobile and web app.
There are still a bunch of differences (handling formatting is different between the two, search on mobile but not web, etc.)

@feditips Is there anywhere I can see a list of the hashtags I have followed?
@lagomoof @feditips
The only place I have seen this so far is in the #FediLab app (on Android). This is not yet in the web UI.
@feditips How come the federated timeline often doesnโ€™t display toots in chronological order? Any time I view the timeline I see posts out of order.
@feditips where is โ€˜federatedโ€™ โ€˜he said wonderingly โ€˜
@feditips So how does the Posts tab get curated?
@feditips @eirliani Use lists to help you with organising your feeds if your client supports them!
@feditips ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ
@feditips on the iPad app, thereโ€™s the main feed which I assume is stuff I follow and then on the right something called Posts, which I have no clue what that is.
Web and device app devs/designers should talk to each other and come up w some consistent labels across platforms.
@feditips Thanks :) Worth noting that many servers block some other servers, and so the Federated timeline won't show posts from there.

@feditips Minor correction:

Home - Posts from people you follow, or posts boosted by people you follow, plus posts featuring hashtags that you follow.

I've seen a number of guides and charts like this that leave out the role of boosts.

@feditips An alternative explanation of the three feeds:

1. Home, the default, contains the posts of the people you follow in any instances;

2. Local, which displays all the posts from everyone who is in the same instance as you; and

3. Federated, which displays all posts from all profiles connected to your instance, i.e. everyone that at least one person from your instance follows.

@feditips Whereโ€™s the Federated timeline on the official Mastodon iOS app? Also, why doesnโ€™t it show alt text?

@feditips @chad
So questions about the "news feed" - I'm on mstdn.ca.

Most news is from BBC vs ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ sources. Is there a reason for that?

The feed seems...old. Most news hangs around for a few days. Is this singular to this instance or common to all?

Would like a wider feed (non-USA!!! Though) of Canadian news. Can I get that?

Learning to enjoy a more "peaceful" SM experience here. Thanks!
