Bodie, CA: America's Greatest Ghost Town | Abandoned America

Bodie, California isn't just one of the largest ghost towns in America - it's also one of the best preserved.

@AbandonedAmerica I've been there! It is an intriguing tour and look at life in a mining boom town!
@CrazyITGuy42 it really is. Can't recommend it enough to people
Ghost Town Living

Living in an abandoned ghost town, trying to bring it back to life. Cerro Gordo was established in 1865 and went on the be the most prosperous silver mine in California's history. At it's peak, over 4,500 miners called Cerro Gordo home. Nearly $500 million worth of minerals were pulled from the hills. Law enforcement wouldn't go to Cerro Gordo and miners were expected to solve their own problems. This led to over a murder per week in it's heyday. Once the silver and water ran out, most packed up and headed out. The town has sat mostly abandoned for over 100 years. My hope is to breathe life back into this town. My goal one day is to allow more people to come and stay overnight. Restoring an abandoned ghost town with no running water is a long process with many ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. This channel is dedicated to tracking that progress.

@enmodo oh, I read about this. Wonder how he's doing with it? I do want to see the place
@AbandonedAmerica Doing great, going strength to strength with a lot of help from many supporters. Well over 1M subscribers for his channel. You can now officially drive up and visit although the road has been washed out twice this winter so AWD/4WD advised.
@enmodo that's great! I'm looking forward to watching these
@AbandonedAmerica we've been there three times, and every time find something new.
It does get a little harder for me to move around each time, but I can set my pace there.
@olavf @AbandonedAmerica
Is that because of the altitude?

@JasonOmara @AbandonedAmerica nah, I got a bunged up foot and even hopped up on ibuprofen I have to watch my step. So it's like hobble around one day and find something to do the next.

Last time we got super lucky and not only was Tioga Pass actually open but there wasnt anyone in Yosemite Valley. Crazy.

@olavf @JasonOmara that IS lucky. Both times I had bad luck around the trip (though the place was spectacular) but I could totally see where the terrain there would be challenging in that case

@AbandonedAmerica sorry to hear that :/ It's remote enough that small things can become big things. But I'm glad the main attraction worked out

I don't know if you've ever done a (dis)organized photo walk but even a small group the pace is forgiving

@olavf thanks! And I did a photo workshop here and was hoping to go back
@AbandonedAmerica idk what happened to the other half of my comment but a cane is more friendly than other options. And I'd be offended if they changed anything
@AbandonedAmerica @JasonOmara I am impressed. One does not stay in the park after the sun goes down.
@olavf only twice for me but I want to go back. Maybe it'll be the opposite for me: the first time I went my back was horrible and I could barely walk. One of the worst times it happened. But I knew I might never get another chance to see or photograph it so I suffered through it anyway. I'm glad I did but boy was it agony even though I was loving the place itself.
@AbandonedAmerica This looks like it should be an album cover.
@katq906 yeah actually it totally does. I'm thinking like a late 70s rock album
@AbandonedAmerica
ghost town
the stars
we leave behind
@AbandonedAmerica I visited that park before it was a state park in the early 70s.
@damartin7421 ohhhh that must have been awesome
@AbandonedAmerica I love these photos especially. So evocative.

@AbandonedAmerica

Bodie rocks! I've been there twice. Thanks for the old memory.

@RockyM same and I enjoy going back to the photos to reminisce so I'm happy to have someone to share them with 😊

@AbandonedAmerica

The moment I saw that pic, all the photos I have (the general store, school house, child's coffin) all came back to me. Thanks again!

@AbandonedAmerica I visited Bodie one summer with my family. What an amazing place to experience. I hope to go back someday!

#Bodie #ghosttown

@TRSlide you and me both! I really was looking forward to returning
@AbandonedAmerica Now that I've gotten into photography as a hobby, I want to go back and try my hand at photographing it.
@TRSlide oh, it's a great place for it. Hard to go wrong with that as your subject
@AbandonedAmerica I have always wanted to visit there.
@AbandonedAmerica who's living here mr. Ghost / ms. Ghost
@AbandonedAmerica That backlight behind the truck. Lovely.
@JulieB thank you! Figuring out lighting is tough. Leaves me even more things to be self-critical about after I can't change things
@AbandonedAmerica looks like a scene straight out of the Fallout games.
@scfw0x0f no nuclear reactor in the truck though πŸ˜‰
@AbandonedAmerica hey if there’s a couple of desk fans and a roll of duct tape that’s enough for me.

@AbandonedAmerica oh so you have been out West. I was trying to look on your website to see if you'd been out here, but I didn't see how to filter by geographic region.

I dunno if you ever photograph with other people, but if you're ever out in SoCal again, I'd love to go shoot.

@paperdigits thanks! I stopped meeting people I don't know after a few bad experiences and my website is definitely east coast heavy but I do hope to travel more in the future

@AbandonedAmerica fair enough, internet people are weird af, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way.

Just found your stuff recently. I've been enjoying it/jealous at the quantity. Keep up the good work!

@AbandonedAmerica That is SUCH a beautiful image! Thanks for sharing.
