Apple adding support for Mastodon previews in iMessage and Slack doing the same for workgroups would go a long way to making it easier to share posts.

(UPDATE: Whoops, looks like I got some details wrong—look downthread for a correction.)

Well this is one of those places where I wish I could quote tweet myself to issue a correction. 😅

Slack already does good Mastodon previews and it looks like improving it in iMessage may be up to Mastodon, not Apple. So I retract my previous statement!

@dmoren Do you have an example of a post that doesn’t work?
@jsit in iMessage? Basically any of them.
@dmoren What do the links look like to you? I’m getting an image, a title, and a domain.
@jsit But they don’t show the text of the post, which Twitter previews do.

@dmoren So, these are still rich previews, just not as complete as the Twitter ones. iMessage treats tweets differently; I believe this is on Apple if they want to do anything with Mastodon links.

(Mastodon post pages already have <meta name=“og:description”> in them, which is how they work in Slack, for instance, but iMessage doesn’t do anything with that data.)

@jsit Yeah, that’s kind of what I’m saying. It sounds like the ball for this really is in Apple’s court.
@dmoren Oh ok. Your last post said Mastodon, not Apple, so I was confused.
@jsit I’m learning as I go. Turns out it’s a complicated issue. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@dmoren Oh ok, thought I just misunderstood you. It is complicated! I didn’t know the answer till I started experimenting.
