“Meets expectations”
should not be the middle of your rubric for evaluating performance.

All this does is set everyone up to be disappointed.

@bphogan is “Meets expectations” the middle of a bell curve? I could see it being 20-80 of your company with the bottom and top 20% being the low and high performers.

@tswicegood

If there is something beyond “meets expectations”
Then that signals that the actual expectation is higher.

Because you can’t quantify what “exceeds” is. Cos when you do, that’s the new “meets”.

@bphogan At an old job, the only way to score more than "meets expectations" was to "Fundamentally change the direction of the company" (Quote from the company owner) Which was very nearly impossible to do alone. As a manager this was horribly frustrating as I had to write reviews for my employees, many of who did way more than 'meet expectations', but their work didn't send the company off on some new trajectory.
